My pedi said they give it 9 months to correct itself, but if her eye is getting crusted shut they can prescribe an ointment. She said we can massage the inside of her eye and rub in the direction of her nasal bridge. Doesn't seem to be helping much, though. I hate when DD looks up at me and can't open her right eye because of all the gunk! I may be getting that ointment soon...

We brought this up at our last pedi appointment and she suggested cleaning the eye with water and a cotton ball, as often as needed, and to gently massage the area under the inner eye near the nose to try to encourage it to open up (couple times a day, or whenever you think of it). She wasn't concerned and said it's very common. DD gets this quite often but never seems bothered by it and we've been able to clean it out just fine. HTH and good luck!
Use a warm wet wash cloth on it a couple times a day. Just wipe away the goo and gently massage the inside corner of her eye while you're doing it. It should clear up on its own.
If the white of the eye ever gets red/pink or the eyelid gets red/swollen, then call the pedi. Otherwise, it's not a big deal.
It's pretty common. DD has one right now and DS had it in both eyes when he was 2 weeks old.
Like others have suggested, all you need to do is clean it out with a warm, clean, cotton ball several times a day (or as needed) and massage the duct.
We've been doing this for 2 weeks now and DD's is starting to clear up. We did have to get an antibiotic eye gel when DS had it in both eyes b/c he couldn't open them.

As PP said, Use a warm wet wash cloth on it a couple times a day to clean the junk and then put a few drops of breastmilk in the eye and gently massage the inside corner of her eye while you're doing it.? It should clear up on its own.? If the white of the eye ever gets red/pink or the eyelid gets red/swollen, then call the pedi.? Otherwise, it's not a big deal.
