Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Qu from 3rd Tri: How soon were you comfortable traveling?

Hi everyone - Just thinking ahead as this is baby #1.  The grandparents are 45 and 80 minutes away.  I am just wondering how quickly you were willing to travel around to visit others with the baby (both being comfortable with your baby routine and comfort sitting for long rides/at others houses etc)?

I am planning on having people come to us for awhile just so I can be comfortable phyiscally healing and with the baby, but wanted to know how soon I should commit to travelling to seeing family in their homes?

Thanks - I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

  • With ds I had an episiotomy that I tore through and had a bad 3rd degree tear.  I couldn't sit on any firm surface, including the car, for 4 wks.  And, it probably would have been a couple weeks before I was comfortable enough with him too.  Plus, he had his days/nights mixed up for awhile.  I wouldn't want to be traveling and staying at other people's houses until he was actually sleeping at night(not through the night but just at night).

  • I'm actually in the car driving home from visiting my parents that live about three hours away. My son is 2.5 weeks. Everything went really good. I fed him right before we left and he slept through the whole car ride.

  • We didn't attempt a trip to my parents' (1.5 hours away) until she was over a month old and sleeping fairly well at night.  She also hated the car seat in the beginning and screamed like she was being tortured.  There's no way I would have tried then.

  • I tore but with advil I was comfortable to do anything.  I have a 2 year old so no rest for me.  I would have been comfortable making a longer car ride right away.  We did 5 hours last week end.

At minimum 2 weeks, but probably closer to 1 month to be real comfortable with stitches, knowing how to nurse DD, and more.

I would not commit to travelling to see family in their homes (aside from grandparents who are too old to travel, if that's the case)-- they should come see you!

  • I think I was probably an oddity, I was pretty much fully recovered before we left the hospital with DS, he was 4 days old.  DS is also a GREAT baby, we went to DH's grandmothers house an hour away for dinner when DS was 6 days old.
