hospital clothes for baby...?

So, I'm trying to get a hospital bag going.

Thing is, I don't really know what to pack.  He'll be born late july/early august, so do I pack short sleeved onsies for the hospital or sleep n plays???

How many outfits do you need for hospital stay??

And, I don't really know what size to pack.  I was thinking about packing both newborn sizes and 3 month sizes because if he's bigger than 8 lbs, he won't fit into newborn sizes, right???

This is a great question that I have plenty of experience with. My DS was a 36 weeker (mostly unexpected, went into L&D, had to stay for monitoring overnight and was told at 9am that I was having a baby) and I did not have my bag packed. DS was 6.6 lbs and was swimming in the hospital shirt. The nurses literally had to fish him out of them every time they unswaddled him. They actually asked me if I had any cloths that they could change him into. I had to send out family to pick up preemie cloths to get him home (he was swimming in these as well) because I only had 0-3 month at home. He wore preemie size for 4ish weeks, 0-3 and newborn for about 6-8 weeks, 3-6 for a week or two and moved right into 6-9 and 6-12.

My little girl was bigger than 8 lbs., but she still fit in newborn for a week or two.  You don't really need outfits for the hospital stay, just for going home.  But even if you didn't have any, at my hospital, they would give you the shirts they were there and of course they are in diapers as well.

  • While at the hospital my boys wore the hospital clothes.  They came home in preemie clothing (5#4 and 5#9 at birth).  When it is time to have another baby my bag will only have bathroom stuff, undies (I hate the mesh ones), chapstick, paper/pen and a camera.  Everything else I brought was in the way.  I had a second bag that I left at home for DH to bring me the day I was coming home.  That is where I put my coming home clothes and the boys coming home clothes.  I am so glad I did this and will do it again.

  • the hospital kimonos were way too big on my little beans. i had my mom get us some plain white gerber onesies that did the trick for the hospital stay, otherwise i would have just let them wear the hospital clothes.

  • Newborn sizes will be fine for an 8lb baby.

In the hospital (and we were there 5 days) G wore the hospital shirts. He wore that + a diaper and was swaddled the whole time. If you bring anything I advise bringing shirts and not onesies. Their cord is still drying and during that time t-shirts might be best. Still I wouldn't pack any clothes for the baby. Just something to take him home in.

    Just my 2c.

  • While we were in the hospital baby just wore the hospital provided side snap ts. We did put her in a onesie because we were there on Christmas Day, so she needed a My First Christmas outfit.

All we really would have used, otherwise, was a going home outfit.

I'd take something cool, you can always toss on a blanket for the ride home.

DD was early, so I don't know about sizing, but it would be rare a newborn that can't fit a newborn size.

Caroline was 8lbs 4 oz and wore NB for 2 or 3 weeks.

I dressed her a few times in the hospital, but it was just for fun. She stayed in hospital tee shirts most of the time.

Take socks for baby...they dont give them to you and baby feet are always cold.

My LO was 9 lb. 8 oz. and still fit into NB size for 2 weeks after birth. I'd just bring a NB onesie, just my opinion.
