has anyone dealt with LONG term fever?

DS has had a fever for over 3 weeks.  He had hand/foot/mouth in the middle of this time frame, but that has gone away completely.  The pedi's office has done blood work and chest x-ray and everything comes back normal.  But, he still has a temp between 101-104 every day!  Anyone been here, thoughts suggestions?  Advice on how to deal with the CRANKINESS that is about to drive me bonkers?

  • Well not to freak you out but you dont get fevers for no reason and thats a high fever! Id sit in the doc office until they figured it out.....  I dont think theres any such thing as "long term fevers"......Follow your gut!

  • the doc said there was nothing else they could test for and said that it MIGHT be a "drug fever" due to some meds that the pulminologist put him on.  But the pulminologist doesn't think thats possible.  I'm just so confused at what to do next.  I would just take him to see the pulminologist again, but she's 3 hours away and we have an appt with her next week anyway.  i just don't know what to do.  can drugs really cause a fever?

  • Yes, you need to get it figured out. 101 is not that bad, but 104 is bad.  Sometimes a virus can take a couple weeks to run it's course, and I don't know if blood work shows that.  Maybe he just got sick  back to back?  Poor thing! : (
  • What about a urine sample?  M ended up having a UTI after tons of testing. : /
  • If your in your docs office and he says its the pulmonolgist then say "Well he says its you, and I cant dirve 3 hours every time to figure it out SO, why dont we get on the phone with him, ILL WAIT, and you guys can duke it out...i.e. discuss what it COULD be."

101 isnt OMG! but for 3 weeks??  That would be troublesome to me....  I would not settle until hes on the road to recovery.

  • The pulminologist just called me (i had emailed her asking about the medicine and sent her some pictures).  She called to tell me to take him BACK to teh pedi NOW and what to test for and gave me her number so they can call her.  She also talked to an allergist at the hospital who said they've never seen a fever from an oral medicine like this, so she doesn't believe thats the problem.  SO, we're off to the pedi again!

  • and DONT leave till the know!!  Also if they give you flack tell THEM to call the Pulm. while you are there
  • So my DD had fevers endlessly for about two months... we found out that she had a horrible ear infection, but the doc couldn't see the fluid, it was too far in her ear. She had tubes put in and adenoids removed, and the fevers stopped. But she could have suffered hearing loss - luckily she didn't!

In our experience, there's NEVER no reason for a fever!

  • wow, the back and forth must be horrible!! I say it high time for a second opinion and new pedi!!!
