What is bedrest exactly?

Can you get up to use the bathroom, eat, and stuff like that?  DH just asked me, and I didn't know.

Re: What is bedrest exactly?

  • When my sister was on bedrest her OB explained that for her it meant 90% of her time had to be spent in bed or on the couch. She could get up to go to the bathroom and eat, but she could not lift anything more than 2 lbs and could not spend more than 20 mins vertical at the time.

Every situation is different, you may want to call your doc and have him explain what he wants.

    For me:

at home bedrest= laying on left side or with feet above my heart, i could get up to shower and use the bathroom.

I had two hospital bedrest situations, One in which i could get up and use the bathroom, the other i was catheterized. sponge baths only. It sucked BIG FAT MONKEY BALLS in case you were wondering. ;)

lol, yea I was wondering, and I'd have to say big fat donkey ball along with those monkey balls.  I can't even imagine!  At what week did you deliver?

  • There's different levels of bedrest. What are you on bedrest for?

Mine was...in bed and only up to pee.

definitely a donkey ball or two. i delivered at 31 weeks. I had pre-e, HELLP, and developed pneumonia in the hospital... fun stuff. haha.

  • Mine was for high blood pressure. I had to lay on my left side and only get up to use the bathroom, shower or make something to eat/drink real fast. Not a lot of fun.
  • I did hosptial bedrest.  For the most part I was on strict bedrest, which meant lie on my left side, no getting up.  Only allowed to sit up a bit to eat.

  • For me, it was staying on my left side in bed - getting up to go to the bathroom, get something simple to eat, or take a quick shower.

Mine was for borderline pre-e, so I was obsessed with my at home blood pressure sleeve.  If the reading was elevated, I get serious about bedrest.  If it was staying down I exerted myself - say to the couch or kitchen =)

In hindsight, this type of bed rest was awesome.  Not serious enough to be scary, but serious enough to feel that I needed to comply.  Great 6 weeks to mentally prepare.

  • I was on bed rest for preterm labor for almost 6 weeks. I delivered at 37 weeks. Mine was modified bed rest so I was able to get up and shower (quickly), make myself something easy/quick to eat, go to the bathroom. I wasn't supposed to be up otherwise though. And I was allowed to be in my bed or on the couch. Just had to be on my side.
