Formula questions

DD starts daycare on Monday and I want to give them some formula as a backup just in case I don't send enough BM one day. Pedi recomends Similac Advanced - any coupons out there?

I do have two cans of Enfamil Premium powder that the hospital gave me and we haven't used since DD is EBF - would you go with what the Pedi recommends or just use this as backup? I know babies usually have to try out formula to find one that works for them so I'm tempted to just send the free stuff. Thoughts?

Re: Formula questions

  • We used Similac Advanced with Easy Shield and loved it.  And doing the CDs, never had any nasty formula poop to contend with.  We didn't BF very long, but I didn't notice a huge change from BF to FF with her.  So I'm a big fan of that brand.

But, unless you have a huge concern that they're going to run out of BM, I'd send the free stuff.

  • Both my older girls had Enfamil... Nothing wrong with it.  We got Similac freebies at the hospital this time, so we've stuck with that. *shrug*

  • Definitely send the free stuff first.

I actually switch back and forth between Similac Advanced and Enfamil, depending on my coupon stash.

  • No clue on the formula question but you might also ask if you can send some extra frozen milk for them to keep as a back up, I know several of the daycares I looked at said they could do that.

  • We're using Enfamil.  I never thought about swapping back and forth, but I might since it seems to work.

And if you decide to go with the Similac and want to pass on the free Enfamil, I know a hungry boy who will take it.  See below.  :-)

I have 2 $5 Similac checks that expire 7/1 I'll drop in the mail today to someone who will use them.  I won't be buying formula before that since I have several cans of Enfamil.

  • I would just send the freebies.  I started with Enfamil, then switched to Similac b/c I was getting more coupons, then swithced back to Enfamil.  (I found that Enfamil seemed to smell less and mix better than Simiac - I did the powder)  Then, after I was comfortable that he was ok switching around, I realized that the Target brand was cheaper, even with the coupons of Enfamil and Similac, so eventually switched to that. I didn't think twice about it.  If he had an adverse reaction for some reason to switching, though, then I would have prob. stuck to one.
  • Ask the pedi for the free sample (powder and ready to feed) of Similac.  I'm pretty sure they have a ton to give you.  Then send that off...

  • I used Enfamil with DD because that's all she liked.  Tried Similac and it was a fight to get her to drink it.  She would also never drink the pre-mixed stuff in the bottles, had to be the powder.  I would send the free stuff and if that doesn't work buy the smallest of the other in case she is super picky like my kid!

  • I had free similac and enfamil with DS.  I had to start supplementing at 4 months due to supply issues and started with Similac.  We tried Enfamil when the Similac ran out and DS was soooooo gassy on it.  We switched back to Similac and no problems since.  I think a lot depends on your baby so I would just send the free stuff and if they have to give it to her see how she acts on it.  FWIW at all of our classes they said that Enfamil and Similac were very similar and they would always just give whatever samples they had at the time, they didn't have a preference.
