Re: baby's head is white w/ dead skin

  • Sounds like cradle cap.  DD had it for awhile.  I used to rub her head with olive oil and then use a fine-toothed comb to pick the flakes off.  That helped keep it at bay, and eventually it disappeared.

  • mere - are we the same person with the same baby???  wtf.  lol.  it's starting to creep me out!  :-)

V has the same thing - most noticeable after baths for some reason.  i've been brushing at it when it's at its worst.  maybe i'll try some olive oil after her next bath though and see if that helps.

what IS cradle cap anyway?  what causes it and when does it go away?  is it an age thing?

  • It is cradle cap :) Just some baby dandruff!

If you leave it alone, it will go away on its own. You can also do as pp suggested with the olive oil.

  • The olive oil really works! My Italian grandmother swore by it, I tried it when my son was a baby and it worked like a charm. Plus it's all natural :) I rubbed a bunch on his head and let it sit for about 5 minutes, then used one of those scrub brushes the hospital sent home with me (the super soft ones) to gently scrub off the dead skin.

  • My pedi said it would bother me more than it would DS, and she was right!  :)  I used an olive oil based soap on DS and that helped a great deal.  I also use California Baby lotion on his forehead and ears.

  • DD was born with a lot of hair, so when she got cradle cap, it was hard to get at.  I also used olive oil, let it sit on her scalp/hair a while and then used a fine toothed comb to try to get a lot of it out.  That initial 'treatment' helped a lot and over the next few weeks, I'd pick out the bigger flakes while she was breastfeeding.

We also did not (and still do not) wash her hair every day ~ usually every other day or so.
