Babies: 3 - 6 Months

cereal and bowl movements

The dr had us start cereal for my son.  He had it twice then he did not have a bowel movement for three days.  I did not give him any more cereal until he did.  Saturday and Sunday he would cry for a big part of the day cause he was trying to go.  When he finally could it was very hard and large he had a hard time pushing.  Since then he has gone a little bit better but sometimes after he does he starts crying.  When he does it is very little.  Is this normal when you start cereal?  Is there a possibility the crying now is he is still a little backed up

Re: cereal and bowl movements

  • Mine had the same problem the pedi told me to put a few drops of dark karo syrup in her bottle and it will help LO go.

  • Yep - cereal can do that.  I had to give DS prunes to get him to go.  (I guess in your case you can use prune juice... I assume your little one is still too young for purees) that or water can help too... of course with permission from your pedi.  Eventually DC will adjust.  Maybe try cereal every other day and see if that helps.  Then increase as things get better.  Or maybe try cereal with out the extra iron (I don't know if they make it with out iron though).  Are you using cereal for reflux?  Oatmeal cereal instead of rice cereal is an option.  The oatmeal has fiber which could also help keep things moving.

  • We have been using the syrup to help him go it just not seem to be helping much
  • Maybe it's because you are 18 weeks overdue.

    Sorry...I couldn't resist.
