Difficulty getting LO to take bottle

My LO took a bottle early on but now at 11 weeks he won't take it.  He plays with the nipple a little but refuses to take the bottle.  I am returning to work in 2 weeks and am desperate for him to take the bottle.  Any suggestions?

Re: Difficulty getting LO to take bottle

  • Is he refusing it from you or from someone else? DD would never take a bottle from me, but would take it from daddy and other people. I won't even try giving ds a bottle - that will be for everyone else. Most babies prefer nursing when they are used to that and know they get that comfort from mommy.

  • My LO does the same thing and I am going back to work in 2 weeks as well. She plays with the nipple, fusses and sometimes starts crying/gagging with the nipple in her mouth. We try and give her a bottle at least once a day to get her used to it. Also, we are visiting day care's house a couple times next week and getting her to feed LO.

Not much advice since we are dealing with the same thing. I think it's a case of nipple confusion. Hopefully they will grow out of it.

It sounds like your baby likes the boob.  Mine does too!  What you have to do is let daddy or someone else give him the bottle.  You need to leave the house (go outside) so the baby doesn't see, hear or smell you near by.  If he senses that you're around, he'll reject the bottle and want your boob instead.

I had to do this with my LO and so far so good!  We out smarted the baby!  :)  Daddy likes to give her the bottle once a day so it works out nicely for all of us.

  • We had this problem as well.  We gave ds a bottle a few times early on, but he hadn't had one in at least a month and we needed to try again because I go back to work next week.  It took us 4 different types of bottles to get him to take one and I can't be in the house (I just go outside while my husband tries or he does it while I run to the store or something).  Dr. Brown's ended up working for us.  Early on he would take any kind.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Same problem here, and it has nothing to do with who is feeding him the bottle- and he has taken a bottle since he was born!!  So I have NO clue why he's fussing and not eating NEARLY as much as he used to these past few days :-(
