Can I mix pumped milk?

I just pumped and only got a little over an ounce (LO just finished eating...going thru a growth spurt). I would like to pump again later today but am wondering if I can add it to what i just pumped? (i pumped into a 5 oz medela bottle)

(i am pumping so DH can feed DS tonight while I am out to dinner with friends...)

Re: Can I mix pumped milk?

  • I always do this! (The nurses did it all the time while DS was in the NICU at the hospital so I assume it's safe.)

  • you can mix it if theyre both the same temperature.
  • So its ok to put the bottle in the fridge and then pump into it later?

Most people say you would want to cool the second pumping before you add it to the first but I also hear from others who don't and say they've never had any problems...

  • I'm an EP and I do this all the time. I pump into a two 5 ounce Medela bottles (I mix the two bottles and than pour my desired amount into a freezer bag) and then I will take my leftover milk that doesn't amount to much, put it in the fridge and add my next pumped milk to it.
  • I pump, then put it in the fridge.  When I'm ready to pump again I put the pumped milk in another container and pump again.  After I finish, I put that milk in the fridge to chill. When I get ready to pump the third time I dump the second pumping, which is chilled into the first pumping.  That sounds really confusing! Just make sure you aren't adding room temp/warm milk to cool milk.  Wait for it to chill, then dump them together.
  • I do this all the time.  I also mix milk that is not the same temp.  My DS has never had a problem with it.
