Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone's 5mo still only drink 4oz bottles?

DS2 has mostly drank 3.5-4oz EBM bottles. For about a week or so I upped the bottles for the baby-sitter to 5oz. She says all week he's only been taking 3-4 oz again.

I've notice I'm not producing as much when pumping either. 4-5 oz lately. I pump twice a day for DS's bottles while I work part-time. Otherwise DS still eats every 3 hours. He's not usually starving in between feedings either.

Is it possible for him to just want to stay at small bottles? We haven't introduced solids yet and don't plan to for awhile.

  • DD takes one 6-7oz bottle in the morning and two 3-4oz bottles for her next two feedings.  I nurse for her first and last feedings.  It usually averages out to about 15 oz a day.  I think your DS is completely normal :)

DD is 4 months and still only takes 3oz of BM. She's on track with height/weight so I'm not worried. Maybe our babies just have tiny tummies!

  • mine will do 6 oz after waking in the moring and after very long naps, but only takes about 4 oz at all other feedings. she is a petite baby though.
  • My DD eats about 6 to 7 times a day, 3 of which are bottles, from what I have read on Kelley mom it is normal for a BF baby to take 4 oz per feeding until about 6 months.  The amount will increase when the amount of feedings decrease.  There is a milk cal. on there that is great.

That's a good point too. DS2 takes bottles at his 12 & 3p feedings. All others are BF, so who knows if he's just taking more then. He fought taking anything in a bottle for a long time, so maybe he just takes what he needs then and tanks up during the other feedings.

  • My daughter still takes 3-4 oz bottles. However she just recently started stretching her feedings from 2 hrs to 2.5 hrs apart. For that reason, I am going to try increasing the bottle. But at the end of the day, she would have consumed the same amount total. Kellymom.com says that BM intake does not increase between 1 and 6 months for EBM babies.  It starts to go down once they start solids.
  • DS is not 5 months yet - but I don't think he will be increasing that much anytime soon.  I nurse him whenever we are together and he still does not STTN.  I leave 3 4oz bottles (EBM) for him with MIL.  In addition to those 3 bottles he does get solids twice a day - but even when he does not get solids he will only take 4oz at a time.  It is very rare that he will take 5 or 6oz (but when it happens it's always in the afternoon).

  • DD takes somewhere been 2.5 - 4 ounces with each bottle at daycare.  I provide 4.5 just in case, but of course I'm heartbroken when they have to pour out 2 ounces.  She also eats every 3 hours.

I think your LO is right on track.

  • DS drinks 3-5 oz bottles also.  He also gets BM.

  • MY DS is 5mo +2 weeks, almost 20lbs & rarely takes more than 4oz from a bottle, which he only gets a few times when we're out or he's w/other family otherwise he's at the breast & nurses about 10-15min every 2-3hours. He is growing exceptionally, STTN (mostly, he was recently teething), & happy. Seems normal to me.

  • I was talking w/ my LC yesterday about feeding amounts/weight gain and stuff and she said she has a bunch of research that shows EBF babies (bottle fed or nursed) usually start to gain less/hold steady on feeding amounts between 4 and 5 months (for example up until 4/5 months babies gain on avg .5 to 1oz daily= 3.5-7oz gain in a week but around 4/5 months it can be completely normal for babies to only 4oz/week) Their growth/eating is different than FF babies is what she said so maybe he is just holding steady and slowing down on the rapid growth that happens in the beginning

  • DS takes forever with bottles. He gets really bored, so it's a constant struggle getting him to latch on to the nipple and keep eating. I started giving him only 4 oz. He will take more, but if he does he throws it all up. Basically, if he's offered it he'll take it if coaxed, but it's hard to tell if he just isn't into the bottle or full. I supplement because of weight, so he definitely prefers the boob to the bottle. He's just not a big eater...he's a peanut. I don't think there is anything wrong with your LO taking small bottles as long as he seems satisfied and not starving between feedings.

  • DD only eats 3 or 4 oz of EBM at daycare. She still eats every 2 hours though, sometimes 3. It ends up being comparable to the babies her age who get 6-8 oz but go longer in between feedings.

They pour it out? Eek! I asked them to keep it for me, and we usually use any extra for cereal.
