so I am A negative blood type. we thought DH was postive, but after two blood tests (yes, I didn't believe the first one & made him go back!!) turns out he is negative as well. If he had been positive, I have to get this Rhogam shot which basically turns off my antibodies from fighting his positive blood type (at least from my understanding) and in theory this would only affect our next child(ren) (and by affect, I mean I would probably miscarry if it had a positive blood type) b/c it won't be until this labor that baby's & my blood could mix.
Now we know DH is negative, so in theory, no problem, no need for a shot, but the dr still recommends it just in case I ever had a miscarriage and didn't know it, in which case my blood could have mixed previously with a positive blood type.
Now I haven't even taken a tylenol since I found out I was pg so the idea of taking this shot is not appealing to me, but I also don't want to risk it (if there is any risk). What would you do? (and sorry if this doesn't make any sense...it is a lot to write out)
Re: any Rh negative moms here?
I also have A negative blood. They never tested MH, since they recommend getting the RhoGam anyway, therefore it really doesn't matter. I got it, and didn't look back. I know someone who lost their second baby (and it was attributed to Rh incompatibility), and that always scared me. I'm totally not trying to scare you, but this is just how I feel.
They'll test the baby's blood type when he's born, and if he's also Rh negative, I'm fine for the next baby. But if he's Rh positive, then I'll need another shot after giving birth.
well that is just it...since we know DH & I are both negative, the baby has to be negative (apparently 2 positives can make a negative, but 2 negatives can only make a negative) meaning there is no problem (or alternative) so it kind of seems like getting this shot is just to cover dr's hiney.
I just don't know...but I do know you have to get it within the 28th week of pg so I've got until tomorrow to do it!
i am leaning more & more to not getting it. I have worries (like I am sure all parents) about the effects of medications during preg & in young children, but I do believe in medicine & vaccines when they have medical reasons. From everything I have read, 2 neg parents can't have a positive baby AND if for some way, some how I have a genetic marvel who is pos, I can just get the shot within 36 hours of birth (they test the baby's blood type right away regardless) and that would stop my body from developing antibodies against the pos blood type. And worst case scenario, if baby has pos blood type & they can't stop my body from making anitbodies, than this is my only child (which is not what I want, but definitely a fate I can live with.) Again if DH was positive, I would be first in line to get the shot, but since we know he is neg, it seems like I would be taking a shot for legal reasons not medical ones. And my dr said that, she said well you really don't need it, but we still recommend it in all neg moms. so if I don't need it, than why give it??
Thanks for listening ladies!
Ahhh got it, sorry - I read too fast the first time.
In that case, yeah, it doesn't seem necessary.
