Baby Names

guessing many won't like, but asking for input anyway: Edgar

So I will ask for input out of curiosity.  What do you think of when you hear the name Edgar?  I like it more than I did when I first heard it. She says it fits future baby's filipino heritage better than most of the names I like.

(Or, suggest others ... Stuart is still my first choice boy name but my wife doesn't like it.  The name we choose can't start with a 'c' sound or end in an 's' sound.  Our top pick girl names are Eloise and Phoebe)

  • I think of a very, very old man. Sorry, I'm not a fan.

  • Edgar is a Pug or an English Bulldog . . . not a child.
  • I like Edgar better than Stuart.  I can see Edgar if the kid went by "Eddie" to soften it a bit.

I disagree. There's Edgar Allen Poe and Edgar Degas. I think it's a fine name for a human.

  • NMS but there are certainly worse names in the world.

  • It's very harsh sounding, but I agree with PP- Eddie for a nn would be cute.

  • I'm a huge literary nerd, so I love it in reference to Edgar Allan Poe.  I actually like it better than Stuart and I really like Stuart.

Eloise and Phoebe are great, too.

  • Have you looked at the Baby Name Wizard website? They have a search feature that allows you to exclude beginning and ending sounds/letters, so you could narrow your search easily.

  • I think of an old man. But it's not a horrible name.
  • I absolutely love Edgar.  Of course, our top picks are George or Frank so I rather like the "old man" feel of names.

Phoebe is my number one pick for a girl's name but my husband won't go for it.

  • I like it. It makes me think of the hedgehog (I think) from Once Upon a Forest, my favorite kid's movie. It's definitely not trendy...yeah, the more I think about it, the more I really like it.

    LOVE the name Eloise, also.

  • Oh - and I was thinking about it more and couldn't remember what it was reminding me of and then I remembered that that was the name of the guy who the bug alien stole his body in Men in Black, and his wife said "it was like he was wearing an Edgar suit".

So I change my vote to definitely do not do that to your child.

  • Yeah, I'm not a huge fan, but that's not too big a deal. He can go by Eddie if he hates it. Call me oblivious, but I don't get the connection between "Edgar" and Filipino heritage. Maybe it's popular there?

Your sig line cracks me up. :)

  • I neither love nor hate Edgar. Same for Stuart. I don't think there is anything *wrong* with either name, and I rather like the Poe connection. :)

    LOVE your girl names.

  • I really like it, it makes me think of this great guitarist I've heard play a few times, Edgar Cruz.
  • I really like it actually! It makes me think of the fisherman on Deadliest Catch.
  • I like edgar

Yes!  Yes!  Yes!  I LOVE this name.  I love literary and older names, so Edgar is awesome!

Your girl names are also fantastic!

  • I don't like Edgar or Stuart.

  • I have a friend named Edgar and I think its fine. He's mexican and its a somewhat more common spanish name than in english. We call him Ger
  • You guessed right: No
  • Thanks for your input; I appreciate it.

The idea if people calling him Eddie makes my skin crawl.

I am not too concerned that a line in "Men In Black" would be an issue for a child, but it is good to know.

It isn't that it is a Filipino name per se, but it is a name in her family.

I still haven't found a name I love like the girl names, but there is plenty of time.

Not bad, I know a couple Edwards and an Edwin but never met and Edgar.
  • I like it but then again I grew up with an Edgar in school.  So I have a positive association with it.  Stuart is nice too.

  • Edgar would be my least favorite of the Ed- names.  But, it isn't the worst name in the world.  Stuart is okay too.  But, I don't like the nicknames Ed, Eddie or Stu and knowing people would probably shorten both names regardless of what I said would probably turn me off.

I do love your girl names though!

  • Call me crazy, but I actually like it. It's not an E name I would have considered, but I think of Edgar Martinez first, then Edgar Allen Poe.
