I am slowly noting down stuff that we would need to add to our registry. Our baby will be born mid-Oct/early Nov (depending on when she decides to come out lol). What are the must haves for cold weather for fall/winter babies?
Hmmm. I'm thinking about things that have come in handy for us, and to be honest it's all stuff that you'll probably get anyway. The biggies are blankets, footed sleeper onesies (I'm sure there's an actual term for these but I don't know it - but you know what I'm talking about?) and beanie hats for when we walk outside with the stroller.
But except for the hats, I got a bajillion of those things anyway - soooo many people will give you blankets that I wouldn't bother registering for them unless there are particular ones that you want (might be worthwhile to make sure you get larger sized ones that you can use to swaddle - there's nothing more useless than a small blanket!). And it's the same story with clothes - you'll get a ton anyway because people like buying itsy bitsy baby outfits, so as long as the stores have winter clothing in stock when people go shopping, that's what you'll get.
Other than that, the only special winter thing we've bought for them is a space heater for their room since we don't have central air/heat in our house (many, if not most, houses in Australia don't).
Oh! One thing that I want to get - that I NEVER thought I'd want lol - is a wipes warmer. I know it's totally unnecessary, but I'm sure our boys would appreciate it during the middle of the night diaper changes! Currently I just hold the wipe in my hand for a minute to take the chill off, but it would be convenient to have the warmer.
We pretty much had Libby in footed fleece sleepers and cotton "sleep and plays" since it was cold here. We stayed in so we didn't need outer gear, but if you plan to be out and about a bunting is nice for the stroller. We got a JJ Cole bunting but were told that it compromises the safety of the carseat so we just planned to use it on the stroller. Well...she's too big for it now...so...next baby? I dunno. Maybe I'll see it on eBay. It was $40 and is BNIP and never been used. We just used a fleece blanket over her in the carseat. You'll probably get a TON of blankets so don't buy any yourself.
Long sleeved onsies are nice as well as a lot of socks...but again, if you'll be inside with a well-insulated, heated home, you won't need a bunch of "special stuff" for winter. We did get a humidifier since our home gets really dry when we run the heat all day. We got this cute Panda one from Crane:
We got the JJ Cole BundleMe and it was AWESOME. Used that in her infant car seat all winter to keep her toasty. We have both the infant and toddler sizes in brown. Used the infant one in the infant car seat and the toddler one in her stroller. (Got the infant one as a shower gift and the toddler one at my fav consignment store, BNIP!)
I second Loir's reco for a Humidifier.
Don't forget saline nose drops (Little Noses), good to have on hand for winter-time sniffles. Also Infant Tylonol. Boogie Wipes.
We never used a wipe warmer and don't think it was missed at all.
For clothing, we used a lot of long-sleeve onesies. I loved our basic plain white set. I also love the plain white socks, esp now b/c they are great for her little sneakers. Don't forget BABY LEGS!!! And a cute warm hat is a must as well! I found that the best hats were from Children's Place. We used the baby mitts that are supposed to keep them from scratching their face as winter mittens. :-)
For going OUT, we had two footed snow suits. One was waterproof and totally cute from Ralph Lauren, but we really only used it 2-3 times. It had snap buttons and ran small. The one we used all the time I got at the consignment store... It was Absorba brand and super soft, so not waterproof, but zip-up and very cozy!
To clarify -- When went went out and she was in her car seat, like being carried from the house to the car or in the Snap 'n Go, then she wore long sleeves and pants with socks and a hat under the JJ Cole BundleMe. We always put her in her car seat in the house where it was warm, then carried her to the car. When we went walking and she was in a carrier, that's when I put her in one of the snow suits.
For sleeping, we used the footed sleepers every night! Under the Miracle Blanket. :-)
Another idea... We got cotton jersey sheets and they were quite cozy. I also got one fleece sheet which was very nice too.

Ditto to all this. I haven't used the Boogie Wipes and don't have the toddler Bundle Me yet though. Also, we got a couple of flannel sheets from BRU to use b/c his room was colder than the rest of the house.
we just used one of the many blankets we rec'd to keep her warm in her infant seat when going out..and then dressed her in long sleeves and pants and socks... we honestly did not take her out a lot when she was just born since she was a Nov baby and it was flu season and H1N1 was fairly prevalent. at most hospitals if the baby spikes a fever while less than 6 wks of age, the pedi will hospitalize them and do a full neuro workup (including spinal tap) to rule out meningitis...and we wanted to avoid that at all costs! add to it the fact that i was still recovering from my c-section, too, so that's another reason why i didn't go out w/her much (wasn't allowed to carry/lift the infant seat and DH was working a lot)
we also got a lot of hats as gifts so we used those too
the humidifier would be great, though we didn't have one. and instead of buying saline nose drops we just made our own with warm water and salt but the only reason why we needed those was b/c she got sick with RSV (a baby sneezed on DH and got him sick and then he got her sick)
i think most things you can buy as the need arises, really.

This is probably the best advice out of the entire post (including mine lol). We didn't even have a heater for their room for the first couple of weeks because it wasn't THAT cold in there - and when the temp suddenly dropped, it was no biggie to go out and buy one and have it ready immediately in their room. So I wouldn't buy too much stuff ahead of time - I'd wait and see what people give you, and then maybe just buy stuff as required.

I third this!!! I know the nesting instinct is strong, but try to avoid buying MOST THINGS before the baby is born because you might end up with a lot of stuff you'll never use. I HIGHLY recommend that you wait until baby is here to get a stroller. And don't go crazy with baby carriers until you see what your baby likes. You can always order things online or go to a baby store later! It's nice to have an excuse to get out of the house!

It was -37c the night Elyse was born and it was about that cold all Dec/Jan so I feel like she deserved a wipe warmer . We have a few friends who are due in the winter next year and that's what I'm going to get them. I know they're a frill not a necessity, but if you're looking for things to put on your registry they're very nice.
I bought Elyse the cutest purple bear toque! I liked it because people knew she was a girl and she looked freakin adorable. But you could get that after you meet your l.o.
I fourth what the other girls said, it's better and more fun to buy for your baby once you've met them.
