Does your 2 year old repeat words over,over,over & over again?

By this I mean.... if we pass a garbage truck outside- he'll say "garbage truck, garbage truck,garbage truck, garbage truck,garbage truck, garbage truck,garbage truck, garbage truck,garbage truck, garbage truck.................... "you get the idea.

I am wondering if this is just his learning style or if there is an issue? Most time I will say- YES! garbage truck.... and he stops, but other times, he just keeps saying it and saying it like a tape recorder. hmmm...............

yes he does, yes he does, yes he does... and it drives me friggen crazy!

he will only stop if i say "yes honey i see the garbage truck".... but saying "yes" will not do!!

yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

It's like she has Tourette's. It's just how they learn to communicate. Repetition is a big part of learning for toddlers. Even now she'll repeat things in her own little conversation like it is perfectly normal ("and then the garbage truck, the garbage truck came and was BIG and youd").

ETA: distraction helps. Like "is the garbage truck loud?", "does the garbage truck go boom-boom?" and such helps get them out of the cycle.

DD is like that too. She'll say car car car and point out all the cars on the street or in a parking lot. When she gets up in the morning and I pick her up out of her crib she'll start pointing at everything in the room and naming it. It's just part of their new vocabulary learning phase.

Absolutely, and like a pp, he won't stop until I fully acknowledge, "yes, I see the school bus!" I think they need the positive reinforcement of you repeating it back to them before they can let it go.

yep, I think it is just a process of them practicing how to say the word, or maybe they just like saying it, who knows? It is so darn cute though.

DS has memorized my responses too, so he'll say "a garbage truck...yeah, a garbage truck...um-hm"

We know names for all the big trucks and buses. We also appreciate regular trucks (Poppa and DH have one), SUVs, firetrucks, police cars, ambulances, and motorcycles. Whenever he sees any of the above, he'll start in with the "Momma, Look! It's a [insert name here]. Momma! [Name here, name here] Look!"

I can't just acknowledge with a yes or a nod, I must respond with "Yes, Cole. I see the [name] here!" for him to be pleased.

It only slightly annoys me when I'm in the middle of a conversation with DH while in the car. Otherwise, I think it's great that he knows so many different vehicles and can distinguish them all.

I think they are making sure you heard them and showing you that they know the word. They are probably hoping to get the same response they got the very first time they said it. LOL. G went through this phase where she just had to say the word "Tomato" over and over to anyone who would listen. Of course, this was the word she pronounced as "Bobbito" before she got it, so...I guess the world had to know she'd gotten it finally.

As I read this post, my 2 yr old is upstairs in his bed saying 'my daddy, my daddy, my daddy, my daddy...." This has been going on for over 3 mins now. Thankfully DH just went up there...I'm not sure I could take another minute of it.

DS does until I address it. He will say "Mommy-- truck! Truck? Truck! Oooo truck! Truck! Truck!" Then I reply "Yes Quentin, that's a truck."
He then replies with "Yay! Cool truck!"....then the conversation stops there. lol

omg- Griffin did this and drove me NUTTY! DH and I were just talking about it the other night "remember when Griffin said 'daddy's doot!' 3000 x's in a row?" (daddy's tool) He did it a lot around 2 when he was first really starting to talk. Thankfully it didn't last long

Usually my DD1 does it with phrases. It's like she learns a phrase relating to a situation and repeats it over and over in that situation.

For instance, she likes to open and close my bedroom door, especially while I'm nursing DD2. One of our dogs gets very uneasy when she starts opening/closing. So one day I asked her to stop and told her that "Sonny-dog gets nervous when you close the door."

So now, every.single.time she does the open/close thing, she also says, "Fa-gog get noos when oo cos door!" It doesn't stop her from doing it, but now she repeats the phrase as she does it.

lol. I'm living this post right now. Except DD asks, "what's that?" over and over and over and over and over. Constant- especially when we are driving in the car. I used to answer her and label what she was pointing to- but I admit, now I sometimes ignore her or say I don't know.

It gets old real quick.

eta: she also says: Daddy (over and over and over), Elmo and show (when she wants to watch on one of her "tv shows"- which isn't very often).

It's a funny age.
