are you trying to figure out whether your baby has pneumonia or just a cough? i have no idea what symptoms pneumonia have, but i would call your after hours pedi asap if you're worried.
Pneumonia is a consolidation in the lungs, whereas most coughs are irritation of the bronchioles/bronchi (bronchitis). Pneumonia would be a wet, productive cough meaning LO coughs mucous/plegm up...bronchitis is more of a dry cough, but you can still bring up mucous once in a while.
I'm a pediatric dermatology PA at Miami Children's Hospital...I've been seeing a ton of children/babies with a bacteria called "mycoplasma pneuoniae"...this is the #1 cause of "walking pneumonia" in kids and healthy adults. I see them in derm b/c some kids get a rash from it. I always check viral titers for mycoplasma and Epstein-Barr (mono) and some others when I have kids with a rash and upper respiratory symptoms including a cough. I had 6 come back positive about 2 weeks ago. After that, I got it, and DD did as well. Azithromycin (Z-pack) is the treatment for it, so I took it and gave it to DD and we were both better in a few days. Mycoplamsa pneumoniae can also cause pink eye, fever, and of course rash and cough. Does your LO have any other symptoms?? BTW, it's very contagious! (but easily treated and rarely causes a problem). If you're worried, have your doctor check titers.

LO okay. Hubbie got the 102 fever this weekend. I think based on what you guys are saying that I have bronchitis. On tough cold meds from the doctor now but have to go back to work tomorrow. If not better by Friday, then x-ray of the lungs and probably viral version.
