Re: maybe TMI-- but about circumcizing...

  • Sorry- I read both threads back to back and when I replied on page 2... I forgot that the posts that really raised my hackles were on the other thread. (lisajay09 and dangerkitt) ... but they don't need to be specifically called out- their attitude is common enough that I think my anti-sexist challenge to that attitude can just be said without quoting them.  Lots of American men and women have a hangup about the natural male body... not because it's justified- but because they never had the chance.  Lots of babies are circumcised because those men and women don't get over it- even when the male in question is their own beautiful perfect newborn son.

Fair enough, that explains the random post.  It's okay to not call people out individually, especially when it is a prevalent belief or attitude ( and I agree that it is, for all the reasons you listed).  I also agree that Americans have hangups about their bodies, not just the male body, though - both male and female.  I will go further and agree with you that circumcision is rarely thought out, and is typically performed because "that's the way its done".  Circumsision is just an example of a sometimes mindless, sheep-like behavior that is also prevalent not just in America, but many other groups as well (not necessarily regarding circumcision, but many other practices performed or recognized by organized religions and cultural groups come to mind - gee, hope that doesn't start a sh*tstorm).  All in the name of "tradition", right?

What I really take issue with is the holier-than-thou attitude you presented your arguments in.  Well-said and well-made arguments that go straight down the tubes, because as soon as people are insulted, they stop listening and start standing against whatever you are preaching.  I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, but I don't have to.  No one does.  And that's okay.  Likewise, you don't have to agree with things others believe in.  Not everyone is a sheep.  Not everyone made a mindless decision.  Some, but not all.  Regardless, it doesn't do any good at all to get all high and mighty about your beliefs with ANYONE, and it's just rude.  It's okay to be civil to people you don't agree with, even if you don't agree on what you consider the most basic level.

Think about what produces change in you - is it when someone calls you and idiot and a dumba** for thinking the way you do and attacks you as a person, or is it when someone respectfully and calmly lays out their argument to you, recognizing you as an individual with individual thoughts and beliefs?

  • I have seen one, and I have to say, I wasn't a fan. IMO, circs look better and are cleaner, but keep in mind that I've only seen one.
