A wonky cycle question

My sister is 28 and not married and not TTC.

But she has a serious BF who will probably propose before the year is out and then shortly there after they will marry and start TTC.

My wonky cycle question for you:

She has super irregular cycles.  Like 60+ days most of the time with the occasional 30 day cycle thrown in there.  She has heavy periods and killer cramps (she went on the pill in 10th grade).  I recommended that she start charting so she could see what is going on with her body (they use condoms for bc).  I thought this would be benefical when she does start trying (maybe not have to wait a year for referrals, meds, etc).  What do you think?  Should she do this?  Would you do this?  I am being paraniod that there may be something wrong with her when it's too early to tell?

Re: A wonky cycle question

  • I don't chart so my opinion may not count, but I don't think there would be any harm in it.  Especially if she has crazy cycles like that.

  • I think it would be a good idea for her to chart so she can at least find out if she is ovulating. That way when they are ready to start she will already know if she needs a hand.

  • If I were here I would start charting. It's nice to be able to go in to your Dr with a record of what is going on and show them. Otherwise they usually start with telling them to chart anyways. She would be one step ahead of the game.
  • Can't hurt! Might even help shine some light on what's going on. My cycles used to be super weird (they're pretty even now, most of the time) I would have 50+ plus day cycles, then have a couple 15-20ish ones thrown in for good measure. In the last year/year and a half they've evened out to be around 34ish. Charting has been a big relief for me.

  • I started charting before TTC so I could get an idea of what was normal for me.  I'm so glad I did - I learned a lot about my cycle.

Ditto this. If I hadn't charted, I wouldn't have known I didn't O and would have had to wait a year before getting medical help. Instead, I brought in 9 months of charts, and the doctor immediately started doing labs to figure out what was going on.
