Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Going out in public with DC?

My pediatrician said we should wait until 2 months to begin bring DS out to very public places (due to germs etc.)  Most people Iknow have not flooewed this rule.  I am going crazy at home and need to get out.  I want to go to Children's Place and return some clothes.  When did you go out with DC and should I listen to the Pedi or go out for a short trip?  DH thinks I shold stay home unitl he is 8 weeks.

Re: Going out in public with DC?

  • I think we went out when my DS was still fairly new- like 3 weeks new. I think you'll be okay if you make sure to wash your hands (maybe bring some of that sanitizer stuff) before you touch him again. I think a short trip will be just fine.

You can also go to the park or something where you aren't closed in and you don't have to touch things others have.

IMO, you need to get out- you will go insane if you don't! Good luck!

  • DS is just a little older than yours and we've been everywhere!  We went to Target the day after coming home from the hospital.  We go out for lunch with my mom at least once a week and we've been to the mall a couple times.  He is fine!  I think the key is to just keep him in the car seat, stroller, carrier or whatever you use and don't let other people touch him.  I know its getting to be cold and flu season and that makes a difference, but you have to get out!

  • i started taking DS out at like 3 weeks.. and after that we went out every day when i was on maternity leave.  I would have gone nuts at home that whole time
  • we took ds out 2 days after the hospital but that was june.  I'd be more careful now that its cold season.  I'd go but take extra precausions.  Keep the stroller top part closed so germs/ people won't come look at him.
  • We also took DS out at about 3 days. He had a pedi visit after our hospital stay and then on for some shopping. There is NO WAY I could stay at home that long.

    GL!

  • I started taking DD out for walks at 1 week and took her to the grocery store at 3 weeks.  I think if it was winter/flu season I might have waited longer, but it was summer time and didn't think there was much risk of her catching anything.
  • 5 days!  I would have gone nuts if I had waited 2 months.
  • I had DD out at 4-5 days. We went to lunch with my mom, took her by my mom's work (she's in retail) and then went to BRU. I was already going stir crazy by then, I'd never make it 2 months.
  • Our pedi said 4 weeks.

How about tell your DH that *he* can stay home with the baby for two long boring stressful months and you can go out and do your errands? Men are so delusional sometimes.

  • We went to church at 2 weeks.
  • We started going out 3 days after coming home from the hospital. ?I couldn't stand being home anymore. ?
  • As long as you keep the stroller cover closed you should be fine. I think it mainly has to do with going to public places with a lot of germs. There is no way you should stay home for 2 months, it will make you crazy.
  • My friend started taking her daughter out at 2 weeks everywhere! People in public would make comments to her about her being so small and out already. She ended up getting sick. I would only go for walks and not crowded places where germs are floating around. There are alot of infectious things out there. Who knows what people are carrying!

  • I did not take DD out at all until about 4 weeks and that was in the summer.  I would wait the whole 8 weeks now during cold and flu season.  DD just got over a cold and it was not pleasant at all, I can only imagine if she was tiny.  I did bundle her up and go for walks at around 3 weeks.

  • Took him out after 3 weeks...had errands to run and no one to watch him so I had to.  Just keep her covered and don't let strangers touch her and you should be fine.

  • We went out when DS was like 5 days old. Mainly because we needed to do som car swapping and I had to take DH to work. I  did go to a few stores too. I just left him in his carseat/stroller and had him covered up. No one ever got the opportunity to get close and spread germs
  • My little one (6 weeks old) goes everywhere. We're out every day and have been since the day after she came home from the hospital. She's been sick once but my DS brought a cold home from Mothers Day Out.

I think part of the reason Post Partum Depression is on the rise is because doctors tell mothers to stay home for 8 weeks. I would be seriously depressed if I couldn't leave the house for 8 weeks.

  • We went to Target when DS was a week old. We had him at Atlanta airport seeing my mom off at 4 days old. Don't think I would do that again. It was too much for both of us.
  • We went out the first week, but this was in the middle of summer.  It's starting to get into flu season so you have more to worry about.  I don't think it would hurt to take him out, just be careful about how close you let other people get to him, maybe keep the stroller shield over him to keep people away, and use Purell before you handle him if need be.

  • We went out to brunch with DD when she was 3 days old. If I stay inside all the time, I'll go crazy. My pedi said it was fine to take her out, just not to a place like a kid's birthday party or anything.
