Bad Mom at the pool (Yes, I'm judging)

So we joined the local pool last weekend and decided to take LO for the first time yesterday. He was a little scared at first (I think b/c it was so crowded), but then we started again by easing him in slower and he was better. He was probably only in the water about 20 mins or so.

Anyway, onto the judging. There was a mom there with 2 little kids near us. The older one (a girl) could not have been much older than 4 and the younger boy was still in diapers, but could walk and talk so maybe around 18mos-2. I only remembered her because her younger one was crying hysterically and instead of taking him out of the pool, she just kept saying "what are you crying about? Stop crying!" She swims away with them and I put her out of my mind.

Then, all of a sudden I hear whistles blowing and 2 lifeguards coming running into the pool from different directions. The one who gets there first pulls the little girl out of the pool and she is gasping for air. They didn't need to do mouth to mouth or anything as they got to her fairly quickly after she was under. Her BF or husband comes over and is like "What happened?" And the mom says, "She didn't listen to me, I told her to stay where she was, and we were going to go over here, and she tried to follow us." Ugh. Thankfully she pulled both kids out and they were all sitting on the edge of the water. The younger one was STILL crying and she says again "What are you crying about?"

First of all, I understand things can and will happen, but I would never have 2 kids that young in a pool that crowded by myself. There is no way unless you are holding them both the whole time that you will make sure they don't get lost in the shuffle or slip under water. And she had someone with her! He should have taken one kid and her the other. Or (better yet) the kid that was screaming and clearly not happy to be in the water should have been taken out and been with one parent while the little girl swam with the other. Thank goodness she was ok.

On the plus side, I was glad to see that the lifeguards at this pool were so responsible and quick moving. I'm sad I had to see a situation like that to realize it though.

  • I'm sure the lifeguards noticed the same thing you did and were keeping an extra close eye.  People should use their brains a little.

  • That is so scary. I really hate when moms dont take care of their kids at the pool. My oldest can swim very well, but i still dont take my eyes off of him while he is in the pool. I am terrified of  a kid drowning in front of me. I watch other peoples kids too, just in case. I would jump in in a second if I saw a kid go under, and ask questions later.
    Effing crazy people.

Yeah, if I hadn't had LO with me, I probably would have been watching this lady and her kids more closely. I can't believe how nonchalant she was being about it-I would have been hysterical if that had happened.

  • I would be judging this too.  How scary would it be for a lifeguard to jump in the pool for your LO?  The thought has me freaking out a little.  Wow!

  • Last year when I was prego DH and I were at our HOA pool.  There was a little boy who was about 2 or 3 wearing a life vest trying to climb in the deep end backwards.  DH had to hold me back I was ready to go in after him.  His mom was chating on her cell phone not paying attention.  The bad thing is our HOA pool does not have a lifeguard.  I really wonder about people sometimes.  He was fine and his mom came over and got him but still.

  • That's so scary (being a lifeguard, I always hated croweded days at the pool with too many little ones in the water - it's tough to tell what's play and what's real).

Last summer I had to pull a little girl out (and I wasn't even on duty).  We were staying at a friends beach house and were using their community poo which was SUPER crowded.  I was hanging out with my nephew (who was 4 at the time) when I saw a little girl flailing about 10 feet from me (i could stand, she could not).  Her friends just sat there and laughed at here and told her to quit kidding.  I could tell from the terror in her eyes that she wasnt.  So I moved my nephew to my back and had him hang on while I waded over to get this little girl (i was too far from the wall to put him back and still get her before she went under). Poor thing was terrified and immediately clung to me.  I got her back the edge of the pool about the same time as her grandma came running over. I tried to tell her she needs to yell for help if that happens again - not just flail about hoping someone will see her.  Dunno if it stuck or not.  I didn't see her for the rest of the week. Just goes to show you that you CANNOT take your eyes off your kids around water.  The lifeguards in this situation were none the wiser.

ugh..people are ridiculous! Just because he had a life vest she must have thought he was immune to danger..
