Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When is it safe for little one to sleep with a blanket?

DS is 5 months old, and loves to have something in his hand when he's sleeping.  I don't know when it's safe to let him start sleeping with a little recieving blanket or something to hold onto though...

  • I was just wondering the same thing this weekend.  Looking forward to reading the responses.

  • Good question. DH and I were just talking about this yesterday because DS is starting to like falling asleep holding onto his burp cloth or my shirt or something!
  • honestly, my baby has slept with a blanket since day 1.  She now can't sleep without it.  I'd say that if you wanted to, a light receiving blanket would be ok.

  • I've noticed LO also wants to hold onto something.  What about one of the small toys with a blanket (smaller than 12X12 square) attached?  I've been afraid to let her have anything.

  • I've always covered him with a light blanket, tucked in tight. And he usually likes to grab onto his burp cloth when he's falling asleep. I'll let him fall asleep with it, but when he's in a deep sleep, I take it away from him (since he keeps it up by his face, it kind of freaks me out a little).

Yep mine too. Never past mid chest and it's super light weight. Never once have we had an issue. He's been in his crib since 4 weeks.
  • We had to de-swaddle this weekend and I was wondering the same thing! Julia can't fall asleep unless she is clutching something, and it helps keep her from rubbing her face/waking herself up. The resources that I've read say that the highest risk of SIDS is 2-4 months old, but to still use the no blanket, back to sleep policy until 1 year. Last night was only our 2nd night without the swaddle, and I tried putting her in a somewhat thick sleep sack but turning the AC up so she didn't get too hot. This seemed to work ok. I was thinking about maybe sewing ribbon onto her sleep sack down near her waist... she loves her taggie blanket and I thought it might give her fingers something to play with but without the risk of having something near her face.

That's exactly what we do.  And her arms are always above the blanket.  And she has also been in the crib since the day we came home.

This is what we do too...I wrap it around him under his armpits. Sometimes when he wakes up after naps or in the morning, he will try and pull the bottom piece up so he can chew on it, but he's never been able to get it un-tucked. We've been doing this ever since stopping the swaddle at 3 months.

  • Since 6 weeks we have used a large, lighweight afghan with large holes in it.  The girls love it!
  • Ditto to the above ladies. Ds has always had a blanket. He would not sleep otherwise. We tuck it in enough so it doesn't go past his mouth.
  • I've used a blanket with DD since day one as well. Also in the middle of the night she sometimes ends up in bed with us and she is under the covers with us the whole time.....not up to her face though.
