Pumping at work - Schedule

My LO is 2 1/2 months now.  I started back this week to work doing the whole pumping thing.  Everything is going well so far as for the amount.  I am trying to do it where I only pump twice at work.  So, I pump in the morning after I feed him at home.   Then, pump at 11 (lunch) and then again at 2:30 or so.  Hopefully, I can then feed him at the next feeding.  The room we have is very nice, but it is a WALK to get there.  It takes me a half hour from my job each time I go.  I would love to do it more often, but considering the time, etc.  And, I know everyone else goes through this.  The pumping itself doesn't take long it is everything else.

Please share what is working for you. I don't want to get discouraged due to the time it takes, etc.   Also, I will be asking more questions because I will be traveling for two weeks in mid-July.

Re: Pumping at work - Schedule

  • Keep going!  Once I started back  to work I was pumping at 11 and 4 ish!  then coming home to feed her.  That started in November - Now I pump 1 time at work and sometimes I feel like I am losing my supply... but 10 months later I still feel like it is ok.....  Again keep going!  Do you have a good freezer supply?    even if I can add 1-2 8oz bags a week I feel like that is a victory!  they say pump as much as you can to establish your supply!

I thought about giving up a while back..... (because of the pressure from everyone else!)  But she has had just 1 cold and I just feel so lucky!

(as for traveling - work on the supply in the freezer!)

Once my baby started sleeping though the night (5 weeks ago.....) I could get up and pump a WHOLE bottle!!!  (big deal in my world!0

Good Luck - just remember to stay positive and the medela wipes work great!!!!

  • I pump 2-3 times at work.  i get 10 oz on the first pump at 9am (ish) and then 5 oz each time on the subsequent pumps, usually around 12:30pm and 3pm.  I'm one of the lucky ones with a locking office door and I have the freestyle so it doesn't take time away from work.  DD only eats 15 oz at daycare so I've been able to stockpile an extra 5 oz a day, plus if I miss a session, it's no big deal.

I have to start traveling for work soon too, hence the stockpiling.  I'm debating introducing formula before I go, just in case DH has to use it.  She's only had BM so far so I'm hesitant.  TSA's website has the rules for traveling with breastmilk on an airplane so make sure you look those up if you'll be flying.

  • I feed Liam anytime between 5am and 6am, depending on if he wakes up early.  I then pump 3x at work - 7:30am (my best session, I worked this up to 10-11oz), 10:45am, and 2pm.  Doing three sessions over the past five weeks being back has generally upped my supply - I spend about ten minutes pumping each time.

    How long is your walk?

  • Thank you ladies.  Yes, I wish I had an office.  My building is huge - one story with 2700 people and they have two stalls in a room with a fridge and sink.  I am very pleased with the room.  The walk is about 15 minutes round trip.  I've been taking the kids to daycare and picking them up since my husband's truck doesn't take both carseats.  Once he gets a car (hopefully this weekend), I can feed LO normally at 5 or 6, pump, and get to work early to where I can get to daycare for a 4 feeding.  and then feed him there.  It is going to work.  I am dedicated to do so, but it is hard.  As for traveling, I have built a week's supply and have received information on how to send it, but I may have to check out the TSA's website for the rules to transfer the liquid gold!  I am trying to get to where I can go home on the weekend, but the airports for both of the places are not main  ones.  I will work with them to make sure I have a place to pump.  I bought a manual medela pump on clearance to use in the airport.
  • I can see that as an inconvenience, but if your boss is ok with it, just think of it as a nice break from work!  If your boss does have an issue then I guess they'll have to find you some place closer.  Try not to stress about it because that WILL affect your supply.

As for traveling, I traveled for 9 months of pumping, and there aren't really any TSA rules for flying with breast milk.  The only requirement is that your cooler with milk does count as one of your carry on items.  I always brought my milk home, so it's definitely do-able.

    Good luck!

  • It sounds like you have a great plan in place!  I pumped 3 times a day at work (once right after I arrived - I actually went in a bit early so it didn't take time away from my workday, once at lunchtime and then again in the early afternoon) plus once in the evening after DS was asleep if I needed a bit more milk for the first 5 months back.  After that DS was eating enough solids that I could drop to twice per day.  It is hard work but very rewarding.
