Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ugh, I knew I shouldn't have answered the door!

Of course they were Jehovah's witnesses! I should have known when I wasn't expecting anyone & my doorbell rings at 10:30. I always avoid answering the door when they show up as I don't feel like getting into the religious debate with them. Needless to say, they won't be coming back anytime soon Smile

Oh & why do they feel the need to bring their LO's with them????

  • Totally know how you feel! I've started putting a no soliciting sign on my door because it drives me crazy!

  • The last time they came to my door they asked if my mom or dad was home lol!

I got off easy that time:)

  • I used to date a JW and after we broke up, they would still come to my door. I stood out there and told them about all of the horrible things he did and they never came back! haha

  • Can I make a tiny FFFC here? I've often contemplated printing out pamphlets for a fake church that worships goats or the devil and when they knock, handing them those and telling them I'd like to convert them to MY church.

For the record I don't worship goats or the devil.. I'm just a biitch.

  • My grandmother used to drag my poor dad around to do that. Poor kids.

I should really do that too! I mean I know that it's what they believe & whatever & I'm not mean to them or anything. I simply don't believe in what they do & I tell them so. I'm getting really tired of it though, I don't have time to explain this to them every time they feel the need to come knocking on my door. Sometimes I don't even answer, but they were ringing my doorbell & DD is napping, they certainly didn't want to deal with the wrath of Jules if they woke her up! LOL!

LOL! They'd probably stop coming to your door then! You'd get personal amusement out of it as well as not having to deal with them coming to your door anymore. Sounds like a win, win situation to me! They'd be like, "Don't knock on her door, she worships goats." Hahahahaha!

Hahaha.  I've actually told them I do worship the devil.  Should have seen the look on their faces.  Like the person I quoted, I am just a bittch.

  • They come to our neighborhood all.the.time.  The only time they tried to come to our house was when Cat was a few months old in her jumper, and I needed to walk out to the car for a second.  So I left her in her jumper, and left the front door open.  After I walked out I saw them starting up my drive way, and then realized my german shepherd was standing in the door way staring them down.  I yelled over my should, "STAY, do NOT eat them!" and they turned and went to the next house.  Thank god, because even though she wouldnt bite them, she would scare the day lights out of them for sure.  But, they have never been back!

  • Once, I was looking something in my car that was parked in our walkway and this lady came to "teach me the word" or whatever they do, so I made like I was not understanding because I only speak spanish.. well the lady had a good spanish because she had lived in central America.Sad

But, the last one that knocked my door was very respectful. Just gave a pamphlet and left. Maybe he saw my "oh no, not one of you" face or he was used to get rejected.

  • Ugh, I dread it when the doorbell rings and I see them through the window! Awful I know, I'm sorry. I know it's what they believe and all that, but sometimes they just don't take the hint and won't go away. At least the ones that we have around here anyway.

Last time they were here, DH felt a little bad and almost invited them in for coffee!! Indifferent I quickly put the end to that, and he said afterwards he had no idea what he was thinking! *lol*

We have some kids in our school growing up that were JW, and I always felt bad for them after Christmas because everyone would come back from the break talking about new toys and things that they got/did and they didn't get to have any of that.

  • They came to my door once about a week before I delivered. I had FINALLY fallen asleep on the couch, since sleeping had become so uncomfortable. I'm pretty sure the choice words I used had their ears burning for weeks :)

But normally, I just tell them that I'm Jewish, and they shake their heads sadly and leave, because they know they don't have a shot in hell of converting me :)

  • We usually have more Mormons come over than JWs. We are Christians and DH is really into apologetics. We have had many come in for a chat and DH really gives them a run for their money. They don't usually expect to be challenged by a knowledgable person. Some JWs came by the other day and, thankfully, I was putting the kids in the car so they just handed me the pamphlet and left. I felt bad for them. I was HOT and about 6 of them were walking door to door. No fun!

  • I finally joking (kind of put) put up a sign on the front porch that says:

You are standing at the foot steps of a home that owns a vacuum, doesn't need a security system, knows God, and if you don't step off of these steps you will be sniped from the upstairs window.

As someone who used to be a JW, it's not easy to get up early in the mornings and go knock on strange doors. Most people usually laugh or shut the door in their faces. These people don't get paid and are doing it because they truly feel it's the right thing to do. They go out in the heat, freezing cold, rain and snow. I think that deserves a great deal of respect, whether or not you believe what they say.

You wouldn't make fun of other's religious beliefs, so why do it to JWs?

    Just my two cents.

Oh, see, that's where you're wrong. I'm an equal-opportunity religious converter hater. I don't care which god you're selling, if you come to my door, you're going to leave disappointed. I just tell them (around here it's Mormons and Baptists) that we're atheists, but if they'd like to come back and try to convert my husband - who is VERY into (and very good at) religious debate - they're welcome to try another time. We've never had a repeat visitor.

  • Because they are assigned to go through the church, it is part of the teachings. You don't need to debate just take the pamphlet and say thank you or ask them not to come back. They keep a map of areas including houses not to go to. My IL's are witnesses and are some of the best people I know.
  • I will never complain about JWs.

When I was in HS, my mom had breast cancer that was caught early enough, thank God! She had multiple surgeries and was home for 2wks at a time on the couch recovering from surgery. Her first day home JWs stopped by. They came by EVERY SINGLE DAY she was home. They cleaned the house and made her lunch. They would talk to her about God, but were never imposing. My mom was so grateful.

I have the utmost respect for the women that did that. They are a great representation of their faith.

Exactly. There's no need to disrespect. If you tell them not to come back, they won't. Problem solved.

I like to mess with them and say I don't believe in God. I have had many a long conversation on my porch with a JW where I say because I am a scientist I can't in good faith believe in God. I don't actually believe that - but I like the reactions it gets.

They are good people, I know this.  And I always feel bad when I tell them "No, thank you" but I'm sure they are used to it.  I'm not a *** about it and I don't lie.  That's just unnecessary.

Lol, well, I'm agnostic. I can't believe that I'm defending them, as I said, I used to be one myself and I strongly disagree with their teachings. I just feel like messing with them is bad taste. Either don't answer or tell them not to come back. They're not going to hound you to death. They actually will respect your wishes.

They are taught to spread the word. They aren't shoving it down your throat. They come to your door and hand you a pamphlet. Like others have said, you can say "Thanks, but no thanks."

    No harm, no foul.

I understand people do not like being disturbed at home, but JW are not intending to offend you.

  • I totally know how you feel. When DD was a few weeks old, 2 Jehovah's witnesses came to our door. They claimed that they wanted to give DD a gift and to talk to me about something. I was like, we don't know you,  so why would you bring my new baby a gift. Luckily it was time for DD's feeding so they couldn't come in. And they never came back. BUT I did get a letter from them a few weeks ago. They were preaching that we need to join them. Thank god we moved a few months ago. Hopefully they don't find us!

  • Um, I don't give a damn if they are "taught" to spread the word.  Does this mean they have no control over their actions?

Proselytizing is annoying at the best of times...and when brought to my house, downright rude.  Keep your god stuff to yourself and don't worry about my soul.

  • I tell them to pretty much not bother us because we already have a religion, that I am a Hindu(this is when they look at me like I like I am invenitng a religion to get rid of them!!) and we are very happy with it and we needn't borrow someone else's religion to feel better. Dont know if it means anything to them at all.

  • As a Christian who totally believes in 'spreading the word', I just don't think that going door-to-door is doing anyone any favours (including the poor people who have to brave the elements to do it).  No one is going to listen to you, you're going to annoy people, and in all likelihood, you're going to turn them even further from what you're trying to say.  People will make fun of you, because you're annoying!  It's just what happens.

Just live your faith out through your life.  (Like the story PP mentioned... that's awesome that they helped her mom).  Don't shove anything down anyone's throat.  If someone wants to know about your faith, they will ask.  There's a huge difference between living/talking about your faith, and preaching at people.

Very well said. I 100% agree. It's an ineffective teaching method, IMO (and I'm sure in most opinions also). No one wants to be bothered at their own home, and (though most of them will not admit it), no JW actually enjoys doing it. So it's a lose-lose situation.

My whole point was that blatantly being an a-hole/telling them you worship the sun/devil/goats/etc. to them is just ridiculous. It's fine if you don't agree, hell, tell them not to bother you and they won't.

And just an FYI....when people are rude to them, in a weird way, it reaffirms their faith. They are told that they will be persecuted for their beliefs and that when people are mean, they just feel that they are doing the right thing since people are fighting them so much. So just be nice...it will throw them for a loop. Wink

Exactly. I don't wander over to the church while they're in session, asking people to convert to atheism, or to convince them that God is a sham. That would be damn rude. Coming to someone's home and ringing their doorbell in order to try and convince them that your way of life is better than theirs is incredibly pretentious.

  • Whoa! I just put DD down for her afternoon nap & came back to see this thread has taken on a life of it's own! I guess I should've expected it as religion can be a rather touchy & highly debatable subject. I wasn't trying to start a religious debate or anything, just venting a bit about them showing up at my door & never seeming to get the hint that I'm not interested.

Meh, I suppose it gave a little life to the board for a short while anyway =P
