If you don't have stairs inside your house...

did you/will you buy something to use to help your LO learn to crawl up and down steps?

We live in a rambler so we have no stairs in our house.  DD and I went to a friend's house yesterday and she went crawling right up the stairs at their house!  She's never climbed stairs before.  It just kinda got me thinking that maybe we should buy something so she can learn to climb up and down stairs.  Any thoughts?

  • Um, no.

We don't have stairs at our house. He knows how to climb them though.

  • We don't have stairs a our house, but all of our parents have more than enough stairs for her to practice on.

  • She goes up and down at my parents' house on the weekends. She's a pro-no one had to teach her how! She just did it.

That's actually what my friend said when I told her I should by something to help DD practice at home.  Embarrassed

  • Yeah, definitely wouldn't spend money on something like that. Both my parents and the ILs have stairs in their houses, so she does get plenty of practice.
  • No way. We don't go to places with stairs often and yet she's never had a problem with them.

  • We don't have stairs, or go places with stairs (not because I'm anti-stair or anything, we just live in the city and everywhere we go is an apartment with no stairs!) I do kind of worry that DD doesn't really know how to go down stairs (she figured out the up part pretty quickly at the playground). But, I guess she'll figure it out. I'm not buying anything to help her...
  • No.

    seriously?

we have curbs.  there are malls, restaurants, playgrounds, and parks.

if my kid climbs stairs a little bit "late," I will be just fine with that.

this is the kind of stuff that makes me crazy.  take DD to the playground - or don't! - she will figure it out soon enough.

    ugh

  • No. We don't have stairs and neither do ILs. We went on vacation when DD was 9 mo and rented a house that had stairs. She crawled up and down them just fine. Now she walks on the stairs at the mall, at my mw's office, etc. without issue. No need to practice at home. I seriously doubt that they even make something like that.

This.  Kids learn how to get around in the world by, um, being in the world.  We don't need to "teach" everything or buy something special for everything.  Just let them be a kid and they will figure it out!

  • We only have basement stairs that DS rarely uses. He actually learned at the library when he was first walking. the children's section is upstairs and we'd walk it every week.
  • No I really do not see a need for it.  My cousin has stairs at her house and without even thinking about it DD started going up the stairs.
