too much milk??

I think I may have gotten myself into a bad habit.  I get so engorged and am so uncomfortable, that I have started to pump and save to relieve some of the pressurel  Although, I enjoy having a freezer full of milk for the future, I think I am producing too much milk for my baby.  She is 4 weeks old.  Is it too soon to pump and save some for storage? How should I go about doing this?  Should I stop pumping? If so, how do I do this without being in pain? Any advice? Help please!

  • for me, the first 6-8 wks was when i pumped the most.  i was producing a lot and needed to pump too.  that's my freezer stash.  around 8 wks was when my supply started leveling out and i didn't feel engorged or the need to pump.  i don't know, but i personally think it's a good idea to pump the extra for future use.  as long as you're not pumping to try to produce more, i wouldn't think it's a problem.

  • Usually you produce the most milk at this stage, before your supply evens out to meet your baby's need, so definitely freeze it.

I had oversupply and around 12 weeks postpartum my supply leveled off and I don't get engorged or leak much anymore.

If you do want to cut back on the extra pumping, only pump enough to relieve the pressure (a few minutes).

  • You'll be thankful in the future that you have that huge supply.  I had about 130 ounces frozen when I came back to work when she was 14 weeks old.  Now I'm down to my last 10 ounces in the freezer.  It's been great to not need to supplement with formula yet and Amelia is 6 months old.  That stash totally gave me peace of mind on the days at work that I didn't pump a ton!

The engorgement phase will stop soon--- all of a sudden when LO was 9 weeks old, my breasts no longer got engorged, so I didn't need to pump; and now when I pump, I get a lot less milk (2 -3 oz or so per side) compared to when I was painfully engorged (I'd get 4 - 5oz.)

    HTH!

  • I was constantly getting engorged at that point. Your supply is still regulating so it happens. If pumping enough to relieve the pain helps, then I say go for it.
