Food allergies - does anyone's DC have them?

DS is 11 months old.  He's been to the pedi allergist and is allergic to peanuts, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, tuna and salmon.  We recently got him tested for oats, barley, chicken, corn, white potatos, apples, bananas, and peaches.  I haven't gotten the results back from that test yet.   DS has had table foods such as peas, stemed carrots, cooked green beans, and mashed potatos but mostly he's eating the same old stage 2 and 3 foods that don't contain anything above which is limiting.  He's starting to really want my food which mostly contains wheat.  What doesn't right?

If your DC has a food allergy, how are you dealing with it?  Are you getting lots of advice/info from the pedi allergist?  What are you feeding them and where are you shopping.  Any other advice would be great.  Thanks!

  • My son doesn't, but my co-worker's son does, including eggs, milk, and wheat.  She recommends Trader Joes, which has a good selection of gluten free foods (which is good for the wheat issue).  She also mentioned that Whole Foods has some good stuff (I think she said something about donuts, maybe?).

  • a lot of grocery stores (safeway, giant) are starting to sell a lot of gluten-free foods. I know there are gluten-free yogurts.

good luck, I have no other advice!

  • i'm celiac ~ so its sorta a household thing too.

i've bookmarked some of my favorite sites for info.

Its a pain for about a month ~ but really once you get used to it, its really not so bad.  PastaJoy from Wegmans is my FAVORITE pasta.

E-mail me at bradley.class at gmail and when i get back in town, i'll send you a list of some of my fav products (prolly tues)

GL ~ and don't forget it could just be temporary!!!

  • in the short term for shopping:

Trader Joes has a few items: brownies / ready made foods / french rolls.  They can print a great list for you in the store.

Wegmans has a GREAT selection of crazy overpriced things like $7 pizza crust.  But they also have my fav pasta and corn bread mix.

Whole Foods has fantastic cookies / breads and a few decent GF options

  • I'm just beginning to be gluten at my doctors recommendation and it's a lot easier then i thought! GL- i don't have anything to add b/c everyone gave you such great recommendations but you can do it... problem will be you will most likely have to follow his diet, at least around him b/c he's not going to understand why he can't have it and you can... plus as he gets older he might get into something without you know... oh

AND depending on his level of reaction you might have to make you house gluten, etc free b/c i know people who if they get a TINY crumb in their food etc they have bad reactions... luckily i'm not that bad but something to think about.

  • Thanks everyone for your input and information.  I was stressing out but you all have been so helpful.  I look forward to looking at the blog, websites and checking out Trader Joe's and Wholefoods.  I never thought of Wegman's but certainly will give it a try.  He wants to eat what mommy eats and it breaks my heart that I can't even give him a piece of bread.  But I'm excited that there is alternatives.  The Pedi and Pedi allergist has given me zero guidance.

    Thanks again.

  • How was he tested? We had the skin test done for Troy and it didn't find anything, but some of our specialists still suspect milk allergy. We are going to see another allergist in a few weeks. We also had the endoscopy done which tested for celiac, so I have been looking into all of this. Some of those things he might grow out of, but if the wheat allergy is truly celiac, it can be very damaging to have it, as I'm sure you know. I can't believe your drs didn't give you more information. It sounds like you might want to switch to a pedi who is more helpful. (Sorry, I don't have any good recs).

Also, my 3 yo niece has severe peanut allergy - they have to carry around an epi pen because the 2nd time she ever had peanut-related food, it caused her to go into anaphylatic shock (throat closing up, etc). It is good that you found out through tests and not that way. On the other hand, my 5 yo cousin also had the skin test come back positive for peanuts and eggs when he was a baby and he has been ok, even though they are a little less vigilant and even let him eat chocolate without worrying about cross-contamination. I think he has even outgrown the egg allergy now - that was a little less scary, it just caused a rash, which is why he was tested in the first place.

Here are a few more sites to check out:

    -Food Allergy Network (FAAN) https://www.foodallergy.org/

-(When you are ready to give him chocolate) Vermont Nut-free chocolate: https://www.vermontnutfree.com/

There are other companies that will guarantee their food wasn't processed with nuts, as well. I seem to only remember the chocolate ones at the moment, but Hershey's also has some plants that are nut-free.

I also found out that she shouldn't have anything made in a store because they can't guarantee cross-contamination. With wheat & egg allergy involved, too, I don't know how much of that he would be able to have, but something to keep in mind.

I know it can be scary, but hopefully you will be able to find more information. There are lots of people out there who negotiate and handle it and just like anything, there is a ton of support on the Internet.
