3rd Trimester

Freaking out and wondering...

How far dilated or whatever do you have to be where they won't give you an epi? I am kind of freaking because I am already 6cm and just got off the phone with my mom and she said there is a chance I won't make it to the hospital in time...

Re: Freaking out and wondering...

  • I think it might depend on the hospital.Β  My hospital told us that they will never deny you an epi- you can have it when you ask for it- whether you are 1cm or 10cm.Β  They did say that if it was time to push, it might be kind of silly to get it since it takes 30 minutes or so to kick in.

  • My hospital said there is no cut off point, but sometimes you have to wait for the anesthesiologist to be available, and that can sometimes take a while.
  • I don't think it's a matter of them not giving it to you, it's just a matter of if it will work or not. That's how they explained it to us at the hospital. If you are 9 cm and close to pushing, it may not be effective.

If I were you I would just be on the constant lookout for labor signs and get to the hospital ASAP. Otherwise, I'm praying you make it to Monday!

  • I always planned on not having an epi, but at one point I finally asked for it- mainly because I had no idea what stage I was at and didn't think I could handle it for any longer- as they prepped me for it, I started needing to push and they said "ooops, too late!" so that was that.

  • Thanks ladies! I guess I am just kind of freaking now because I have always seen myself getting an epi. It makes sense that there is no point in getting one if all I have to do is go in and push a few times! I guess I will just play it by ear!

  • Honestly, if you get to the hospital and it's too late, it's not necessarily a bad thing because it means everything will be over really fast. My friend is married to an anesthesiologist and always planned on an epi, and both times she's gone into labor, it was too late for her to have one once she got to the hospital. the babies came right out.

This is what my OB said at the last appointment unless your ready to start pushing (10cm). They want to make sure you have enough sensation to be able to push. Apparently they stop the epi 20 minutes prior to pushing if they can.
