TTC After a Loss

Is it strange that AF hasn't visited? (really long & ranty sorry)

Okay seriously - (disclaimer I really do love my doctor) BUT - they haven't called me back and its been 3 days. I haven't gotten my period since the mc - and its been over 40 days. My betas were down to 0 by the 24th of May (that is the last time they tested but I think they were down way before that since I miscarried on the 7th) so now its June 16 and I'm still sitting here with no AF, no timeline to count from and no idea what I'm supposed to do about it.

My doctor told me that the three months after mc are supposed to be super-fertile and that I should be as regular as clockwork (something I've NEVER been in my entire life). So they wouldn't put me back on the medroxyprogest yet because I'm "supposed" to be regular. Of course they would know that I wasn't in the event they actually returned my phone call...which they haven't.

My doctor was, for the record, super supportive and wonderful before, during my (all too short) pregnancy and during the mc. But since then it is like I have the plague...they don't return phone calls or call me back about test results (it took them 10 days to finally call me back about my beta test blood work).

I just want to know what I should be doing, if its nothing, then fine I'll reconcile myself to that, BUT if this is a sign of a bigger problem, and perhaps even a possible reason that I mc'd to begin with then perhaps we could learn something from it and it shouldn't just be ignored.

  • did you take a PG test.  Huh?

  • Yes - sorry I guess that would have been an important detail. And I did and it was a BFN - plus I just don't "feel" pregnant. No other symptoms other than lack of AF.

I suppose, in that rant if there was a question, it is this...Is this normal? Does it normally take this long for AF to kick back in? Or am I right that something is off?

  • It took 12 weeks for AF to show up for me.

    AND...

10 days to call you back is totally unacceptable.

  • Sorry to pry but - 12 weeks from m/c or 12 weeks from 0 beta result? that just seems like so long - did you dr do anything? or is that just considered normal?

You're so not prying...It was 12 weeks from m/c. She didn't want to put me on any meds because I had long cycles before so she said it was totally normal for me.

  • I'm going to go ahead and say that your dr. is a total a$$hat for even saying the word "clockwork".  That is total bullsh!t and there is no way he/she could know or guarantee that.

It took 42 days from the time of my negative beta for AF to show...I did ovulate during that time and I charted through the loss starting with my initial bleeding...a total of 55 days.  I am seeing an RE so they were more than willing to bring me in for bloodwork and ultrasounds after OPK fakeouts.

  • Okay - so if that is what is normal for you. Normal for me (when not on medication) is to go anywhere from 6 months to 18 months between af so is it possible that I am back on that track? If so, how am I supposed to have one "normal" cycle before ttc when I've never had normal cycles to begin with?

Again I'm sorry to ask all these questions and I realize that (for the most part) you ladies aren't medical professionals capable of giving me any actual answers. I'm just so frustrated.

  • I did have a miscarriage, but i'm still waiting for AF myself. I heard the first ones could take awhile.

  • I think your cycles can be pretty crazy. I have 28 day cycles EVERY month and after my miscarriages, it can take between 30-35 days, counting day 1 of the miscarriage or D&C, for AF to show up for me. I also agree that 10 days is unacceptable... I've never waited more than 24 hrs for a call back from any of my doctors.

  • Your doctor may be nice, but s/he is completely incorrect! I've never met anyone whose cycles were "like clockwork" after a m/c.

After my first m/c I got pregnant immediately, but AF would have returned after 60 days (that's 60 days after I started bleeding - my levels dropped to 0 pretty quickly, I want to say within a week and a half or two weeks?).  After my second m/c it took 67 days - I didn't have my levels followed this past time.

In general, I've heard to call your doctor if it's been between 45-60 days and you haven't had a period.

    GL!

ETA: 3 DAYS and no return phone call?? That doc would be getting the boot from me.

I hope I read everything correctly, but I think you need a new doctor. If your cycles are never normal, I agree with you- how are you supposed to have one before TTC? I know you like your doctor, but there are a lot more out there that you'll like too and that will be more proactive.

  • I am going to try and call them again tomorrow. I specifically chose this dr because they are all-inclusive. OB & GYN services, high risk, infertility, and midwives - plus they are affiliated with the hospital I want to (eventually) deliver in. I don't even know if there is another doctor in my area that meets all those requirements when I chose this one 2 years ago I know there were not, as it is I have to travel 30 minutes to get to this one.

So they kind of have me, and I think they know it.

  • It took 9 weeks from my m/c for AF to arrive again. 8 weeks from a a Beta of 0. So, yeah...it can take FOREVER. Sorry. :(
  • My first AF took 8 weeks to come after my last 2 m/c.  It does sound puzzling that your dr. would say 'like clockwork.'

  • You need a new doc, firstly.  Secondly, it's not true that everyone returns to clockwork.  I carried my twins for 18 weeks and AF never came for me.  At 40 days, I went on progesterone to have a withdrawal bleed b/c we were ready to TTC again right away.  It's probably nothing serious, m/c really wreaks havoc, but I would def find a new OB.  GL!
