New Baby Instruction Kit!

In Arizona they are going to start making kits available to new parents. The kits are free and come with six videos, a parent guide, and an infant board book.

Would you want one? Do you think other states should start doing this too?

Re: New Baby Instruction Kit!

  • If you need an instruction kit to know what to do with a baby maybe you should not be having one! Sorry

  • I guess it can't HURT to give parents these things at the hospital.  But of course you figure that the people who need them the most problem won't look at them anyway.

True, and yet people who meet that description keep having babies anyway.  Maybe it will help.  Assuming that they would be the people to actually look at the kit.

  • I received one of these when I attended my birthing class at Scottsdale Shea this past weekend.  While 99% of the information contained in this kit is simply common sense, I will say that it is filled with some great resources for new parents.  Since it is funded by the Piper Trust and tobacco taxes, I wholeheartedly support the idea of making this kit available to new parents.

I want to stay away from a political debate but the problem will not be solved this way. Leave it to the gov't to create a problem and then try to "fix" it.

If we did not have a welfare state which many "abuse" we would not have the incentive to be so careless with our actions. Charity should be left in the hands of the private sector where people like you and I can choose to help whom we seem fit to need the help. However the state helps "everyone in need" ... but is everyone really in need? .... There is a lady in my city who constantly sells her formula which she gets from WIC/foodstamps to make a quick buck, I doubt the state is doing her a favor and I doubt the "kit" would in some way help or benefit her in anyway.

Hmm...for someone who wants to stay away from a political debate you didn't do a very good job!!!

I think this a bit harsh.  This will be our first baby and we are doing a lot to learn about parenthood like reading books, taking classes, talking to other parents.  There are a lot of books out there on how to parent because while some things may seem common sense, the same thing doesn't work for every child.   Giving people resources isn't a bad idea, especially if these parents may otherwise not have access to them.

  • They give out something like that in VA. It has handouts on PPD, breastfeeding, common questions on new baby care like how to give baths, questions on mom's care post-partum, etc.  It also had a copy of Goodnight Moon.

I think they are nice. Plus it was a nice place to stash all the stuff from the hospital like the birth letter, etc.

Wow I wonder how much of my tax dollars are funding this while our state is going bankrupt.

Not a penny, unless you purchase tobacco and pay the state excise tax that goes along with that.  The rest is funded by the Virgina Piper Charitable Trust.
