Spotting and Bed Rest?

I had some spotting last night for the first time and my Dr. put me on bed rest today (or the rest of the week if it doesn't stop). Isn't that a little intense? Then she mentioned the miscarriage rate in the first tri is 25%. Way to freak me out! I think i'm going to try someone new. I'm glad I have my NT test on Friday to put my mind at ease.

  • I hope everything's fine.  The 25% thing isn't exactly accurate for you most likely because it drops dramatically if you've seen your LO with a strong heart beat on an u/s after 7 weeks.  It drops to like 5%.  I had a ton of bleeding 2 weeks ago (not spotting - gushing) and wound up discovering that I had a hemorrhage in my uterus.  (The baby was fine).  I was also put on bed rest just so that it could heal.  Maybe that's the hope for you.  Just take it easy.  I've had a m/c before.  If the bleeding increases and you're losing tissue and it's accompanied by intense cramps then call your doc again.  If not, I'd say try not to worry and stick it out until your scan.  Spotting can be totally normal.  It can be from an irritated cervix.  Some women spot their whole pregnancy.  Good luck on Fri. and keep us updated!

  • I had bleeding at 11w4d. 2 days of bed rest and some progesterone pessaries and I was fine. it happens to a lot of women and most of the time it's all alright. hang in there
  • 1) 2nd trimester starts, as far as the baby is concerned, at 12 weeks, so your doctor is an idiot for saying you're still in your 1st trimester.

    2) I think bedrest is a little extreme. I started spotting at 11w6d, and was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma. I was placed on pelvic rest, with lifting and exercise restrictions for 3 weeks. The hematoma is now resolved, and the restrictions have been lifted.

I'm surprised your OB isn't doing an u/s to determine the source of the bleeding and to make sure you don't have a placenta previa.
