If your baby is on Prevacid...

DD has been on Prevacid now for three weeks and her reflux is MUCH MUCH better. I have a question about the quick dissolve tabs though if you're giving your DC those too. I've done everything I can think of to make them fully dissolve and I can't get them to. There is always some powder left no matter how long I let it sit or how hard I shake or how hot I make the water or anything! I usually try to put some of the powder under her tongue but clearly that doesn't work well. Any tips? I feel like she isn't getting the full dosage because not all of it is dissolving.

  • We did those tabs for a few days, and I found that just putting the tab in the side of Dylan's mouth was the best.  It dissolved quickly, and it seemed he got more of the medicine that way.  When I tried to dissolve it in water, it just turned into little tiny balls that were impossible to really administer.  So glad the prevacid is helping her!

  • I crush it up (I have a pill cutter/crusher similar to this one - I think I got it at Target?), then put the powder in a spoon.  I originally used a plastic disposable spoon, now I use a soft-bite one.  Then I add breastmilk (or water) and use my finger to mix it up.

When C was younger, I just added enough liquid to make a paste that I could get on my finger, then put it in C's mouth and let him suck it off my finger (or you could smear the paste inside L's cheek).  Now that he's a little older, I use the softbite spoon, get it really liquidy, and let him slurp it off the spoon.  It works much better than using a syringe or trying to dissolve it in his mouth, IMO.

Luca was on it for about 6 months.  We just broke it into pieces and put in in his mouth....
  • i also put the 1/2 tab right in Mathis' mouth, between his cheek and gums in the back. when he was really small, i would do that and then nurse a little but around 6 mos i started just putting it in and he would suck/swallow.

  • Sadly, it will never fully disolve. The little orange-ish granuals will have to be swallowed. Evan loved drinking the water from the syringe, but sometimes had a problem keeping it all in (especially after he discovered he could push things out with his tongue).

We also noticed that he would spit it up sometimes even an hour or more later. If you see little purple stains on burp cloths or L's clothes, that is what it is.

Evan isn't on it anymore because it wasn't very effective for him. We are still playing with his meds, but I hope it works for you.
