Breastfeeding

Day 11 after delivery and milk still not in :(

Has anyone ever heard of breast milk not coming in ever?  I've been nursing him at every feeding for at least 20 mins, and supplementing 1-2 oz of formula (they had us start supplementing in the hospital b/c his blood sugar was low). I'm also pumping for 10 mins on each side at almost every feeding, but only about 1/2 teaspoon of colostrom comes out.

I have a lactation consultant coming out tomorrow, and I'm going to try to pick up some of that fenugreek @ the store today, but if anyone has any ideas how to make my milk come in, I'd love suggestions!

DS was 2 weeks late and I had a c/s, which I read can also delay milk from coming in.  And I know stress has something to do with it, but I really don't think I've been that stressed about it and trying to go with the flow, but the longer it gets, the more I wonder if it will ever come in Huh?

  • It could still come mama!  It's good you are meeting with an LC.  I'm sure the c-section and stress of that has something to do with it.

What I'd suggest is having a nurse in.  Keep baby skin to skin as much as possible and try to get him nursing as often as you can - closeness to baby will help your milk come in.

Use a dropper to feed the formula at the breast - you might also be able to trick him into latching by getting a bit of formula on your nipples to encourage him to suck.  The more you can get him to actively suck, the better.  You will probably have to work at keeping him awake on the breast - tickle his feet and cheek, strip him down to his diaper, try a cold cloth on his feet.  You will want to try nursing every two hours (so if you try at 8, you'll try again at 10 even if he nurses for 45 minutes or more).  I'd do that around the clock if you can but not more than 3 hours overnight if you do need to sleep more.

I'd keep pumping as well.  Also, don't worry about doing anything else but nursing - camp out somewhere and have your DH or someone bring you everything you need.  Drink tons of water and eat plenty.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the suggestions :)  I was doing skin-to-skin in the hospital, but haven't been much now that we're home.  I'm doing about every 2.5-3 hours now, so I'll definitely try stepping it up!
  • Your welcome ;-)

The skin to skin thing really does work!  And frequency is super important.  Once your milk is in and kiddo learns to nurse well, you won't have to work so hard (or nurse as often!).

  • I agree with PP. Nurse frequently. I had a c-section too, but I did nurse DD constantly and for long periods of time. So much that the nurses were joking about it! My milk came in after 2 days, and I think part of it was the frequency we nursed (and maybe because I had nursed my previous child).

It's really great that you are meeting with a LC. I hope she has some advice for you too!

  • I bet you anything it is a latch problem.  Just looked in all my books and they said a good latch is vital to getting milk to come in.  Awesome that you are seeing a LC. She will be able to make sure the baby has a proper latch, suck, etc.  My first dd had some serious nursing issues and we used a supplemental nursing system (first with formula and then with breast milk once it finally came in) to help stimulate my demand.  I saw 4 LC's before we finally found one that figured out dd.  I will say that we she had her last bottle of formula at 4 weeks and we bf until 13 months!  Not sure if you have resolved this since then but hang in there!!!
  • Hang in there.. at 11 days I was excited to get drops in the bottles when I pumped, and by 1 month we were able to cut off supplements and EBF.

Also, if you're only supping 1-2oz at each session, he IS getting something from you.

Are you supping before or after nursing? I know most people say to supp after, but google "bottle first supplmentation"- I think the article is by Diane West. I did it, and it worked great.

You say it worked great, how so? Did your supply eventually increase? I've been thinking about switching to this.
