Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Should I force him to drop AM nap?

My little guy really seems to need the morning nap but he throws a fit for the second nap.  And each nap has been about 30 min. lately, but occasionally he'll have a really good long one, like 1 hr 20 min or so.  So I feel like if I could get him to do one longer nap that might be good, but how do I go about it?

  • Maybe gradually move the morning nap later and later until it is close to the time you want it to be.  Then just keep him super entertained one day until you want the nap to start.

    good luck!

  • I KNOW it is hard, but I would just go with the flow.  If it is a two nap day, do two naps.  If it is a one nap day, let it go.  He will get it eventually.

It will happen and then he will probably nap for 2-3 hours at a time.  Lily was in the transition phase for what felt like a million years (really 2-3 months), but now she naps at least 2 hours a day.  She didn't drop that 2nd nap until 18 months FWIW.

Oh wow, that's good to know!  I read the poll below and it looked like practically everyone dropped it at 12 mos!  I was thinking the problem must have been that he's at the age where he should just be taking one.

  • We still do 2 naps on the weekends. DD has 1 nap at daycare (they only do 1 nap time in the 1 year old room) and sometimes falls asleep on way home 1-2 days/week.

  • Ds has been doing 1-2 naps for most of his life (since like 4ish months).  I knew at that age he should be doing 2-3, but he didn't follow that pattern.  He's 15 months and still does 1-2 naps, depending on the day.  Don't worry if your LO still does 2!

  • When I tried to get my son to take 1 nap instead of 2, I thought I'd drop the morning nap and keep the afternoon one, but he was NOT having it.  For some reason, he really needs that morning nap.  He wakes up, has breakfast, plays, and then 2.5 hours after he wakes up (like clockwork!) he takes a morning nap.  Sleeps for about 1.5 hours, wakes up, has lunch, and is fine for the rest of the day until he goes to bed at 7:30 or 8.  He sleeps about 12 hours a night, and between 1 and 2 hours during the day for that morning nap.  Works for him.  GL!
