BFing with a Prolactinoma

I was diagnosed with a Prolactinoma at age 15. After getting married, we struggled TTC for 3 years, after taking Bromocriptine with no success and then Cabergoline with hardly any progress, I looked into the idea of having my tumor surgically removed. In the meantime we adopted and shortly thereafter we became aware that we were expecting while off the medication.

Now I am faced with the thought of not being able to BF because my OB wants to make sure that my prolactine levels do not cause my tumor to overgrow and obstruct my optic nerve. If I go back on Cabergoline or even Bromocriptine I would not be able to BF.

Did anyone battle with this? Where you able to BF and postpone treatment? if so, how many months/weeks were you able to BF and/or pump?

Re: BFing with a Prolactinoma

  • I have/had an anterior pituitary tumor that the doctors still watch- it hasn't really caused symptoms and my hormone levels always come back normal. I was very lucky to get pregnant quickly and have been able to ebf. Do you have the option of nursing and stopping at the first sign of growth, since you were looking into removal anyway? My docs told me they wouldn't be aggressive unless I started having symptoms, and that sometimes the smaller tumors will go away on their own.
