August 2013 Moms

Thanks, Doc?

I had my 24 week appt today. Baby girl appears to be fine, though we couldn't get an accurate heart rate because she kept kicking the doppler. (HA!)

So when I got in, as per usual, they had me hop on the scale. I started out this pregnancy a little over weight (approx 185-186 lbs.), during my first tri I lost 6-7 lbs. Since second tri has started I've been having MAJOR issues with constipation. I basically eat nothing but fiber now, and it still doesn't do much. So, as of this morning, I was pushing (ha..) 3 days of no-go, which, of course, showed up when I stepped on the scale. I'm currently weighing 188 lbs. I wasn't happy about it, but I'm freaking pregnant and in actuality, have only gained 2-3 lbs, right?? Well wrong apparently! My OB took the time to remind me to try not to gain anymore weight in the next 4 weeks (yes, he knows about the constipation), and gave this huge speech about being healthy during my pregnancy. I was so upset when we left. Am I not allowed to gain anything at all since I started overweight?? Do I get no sympathy for spending 3-4 hours a day trying to "loose" 2 of those pounds? :(

On top of all that, he made a comment about how I'm "getting spotty" on my belly, talking about getting my first stretch marks. Which are actually from before being pregnant, thank you very much. Sorry, we can't all start out so perfect! I love my OB, I really do, but he seriously made me cry today!

I'm 24 weeks PG, having gained only 3-4 lbs, and am still in pre-pg jeans! I feel pretty damn good about myself, and I don't appreciate his attitude! - Sorry, I just needed a little self-affirmation and a vent. Thanks for letting me get it all out, MH just tells me to ignore him, but he's my doc! Not real sure how that would work out for me. Ha!

  • I'm surprised. I don't know how tall you are but unless you are obese you are still usually supposed to gain weight although less

  • That's ridiculous! He can't expect you to not gain ANYTHING; LO SHOULD be gaining weight, and pretty rapidly, within the next few weeks. Screw him; you could eat iceburg lettuce and not gain anything for the next 4 weeks, but your baby wouldn't be getting the nutrients she needs. If you're eating sensibly and getting the proper amounts of fruits, veggies, and lean protein, then don't worry about it.

Um...I wouldn't be going to an OB that made me feel this way. So sorry your OB is so insensitive.

  • If you are eating healthy, exercising and drinking adequate water, don't worry so much about weight gain.

My doc bases weight gain on pre-pregnancy weight, not 1st trimester bottom-out weight. Prepregnancy, I was 204, now I'm 209 (this morning). My doc wants me to stay in the 11-20lb range, and so far so good.

Right? That's kind of how I felt, I didn't want to talk back to him, but this may be some advice I just don't follow. Sorry, doc.

And to PP, I'm only 5'5", so medically speaking I was "obese" pre-pregnancy. So I know I'm not "supposed" to gain a LOT of weight, but am I not allowed a little wiggle room? :( I'm just whiney, it's a real blow on your self confidence when the doc tells you you're too fat.

  • That's crazy!  Again, I don't know what you're 'ideal' weight is but I started out about 50 lbs overweight (although I carry it very well if I do say so myself!).  I lost 5 pounds the first tri and at last weigh in I was 4 lbs over my prepregnancy weight, the doctor hasn't said a word to me about and doesn't seem at all concerned.  The baby is perfectly healthy and has pretty much measured right on schedule so she sees nothing to worry about.  Clearly in the third tri I will probably gain a few more because the baby will gain more, as I'm sure you will too.  It's expected.

Just let it out and know that so long as baby's healthy and you're not grossly over doing it with the food, you're fine!

  • I'd be pretty mad. How tall are you? I guess that plays into the weight gain thing, but he shouldn't be shaming you for a less than 5 pound gain at 24 weeks. That seems insane to me.

I feel you on the constipation - it's awful.

Even if you are technically obese you are still supposed to gain 11 to 20 lbs.

    Anniversary

  • I'm 24 weeks PG, having gained only 34 lbs, and am still in prepg jeans!

Seriously jealous of you right now! 26 weeks and gained a total of 17 pounds.
  • I started this pg about the same as you and I gain 10 pounds nd my dr. Said weight gain was fine.  I would ignore him.
  • Your doctor sounds like an as. I started out overweight as Well. Alot more so than what u said. As of my last appointment I am up 11lbs. I asked doc and she everything was fine. She's more concerned about the big picture cause I've been swelling and my bp is up a little, not much but a little. I don't why yours is being this way. I think He's being unrealistic.

    Ditto for me.

With DS, I gained a lot of weight. About 35 to 40lbs. This time I'm working out 4 to 5 days a week and eating well. I'm still up 10 lbs. My OB says a lot of times it's genetics and you can't do anything about it. She said not to let it ruin my pregnancy experience. Just keep up the healthy lifestyle and do the best I can.
  • imagechattychiqa:
I think he was really very harsh on you; also i know he's a dr but i think his expectations are unrealistic. Constipation will play a huge part in weight gain, so does pre existing obesity. I was probably about 270 when I conceived my last, and lost weight before delivery... About 35lbs...my dr was surprised but worried. She said it was unusual to see the scale go in the other direction. I can't imagine what I would feel like if I had been scolded for gaining 3.

I like to think overall he's trying to look out for my best interests, but I, too, felt he was rather harsh today. The constipation thing for sure, it's not fair to judge my weight gain accurately if I haven't poo'd in 3 days! He didn't say a word when I lost some weight, but I think I'm doing great! I'm trying so hard to stay positive and not let any weight gain bother me (I'm always so worried about it), I'm just trying to focus on a healthy baby girl. :) Thanks for the support everyone! I defiantly feel better now! :)

  • I'm right there with you. I'm 5'6" started out at about 183lb, my 24 week appointment I hadn't gone in 3-4 days and I went in at 1pm, right after lunch so none of that had even started to digest. I was at 202 which generally made me want to cry before the Dr said anything. But my husband and I are both sitting in the room, the dr walks in and says"your blood pressure is perfect your measuring 24 weeks but lets talk about how you are gaining too much weight." She then proceeds to discuss my weight in front of my husband who lord knows I didn't want know the highest weight I have ever been in my life. She told me I shouldn't gain anymore weight over the next few months. I was in tears when she left. It doesn't help that in high school I had eating issues and weighed in at about 97-107lbs (I was a dancer.) All of those old fears of being fat flooded back, but I know that as long as I am doing what is best for baby she can kiss my a**. Sorry you had to deal with that, I know it sucks.

  • I think we have the same doctor. I've also had an VERY similar experience. I was told not to gain any weight AT ALL! She told me to eat only "meat and vegtables."  My BMI was around 26, so I am slightly overweight. I've been eating the same as pre-pregnancy and have gained 10lbs so far. I know I'm doing the best I can and that's all they can expect. I practically told one of the doctors to go fly a kite.

Hang in there. I dread going to the doctor, awaiting a lecture about my weight, but only a few more appointments, right?

    S/PAIF/PAL ALWAYS WELCOME!!
  • Sorry your doc is an ! I'm clinically morbidly obese and was told by my doc that I just shouldn't go over 15, and that 11 is ideal and that I need to limit my milkshakes. Which, I understand, but still, that's my craving!!! I compromised by stop going to Burger King or McDs for their "shakes" 3 times a week and to instead get "quality" milkshakes from Baskin Robbins, Oberweis, Culver's, or Chick fil A once or twice a week. Depending on my location at time of craving. ;D
I think your doc is unreasonable to think you shouldn't gain ANY weight! Sheesh. BTW, even with my cravings I've only gained 6 pounds and I'm 24 weeks. I'm feeling pretty good about that as well!! You should feel great and awesome for still fitting into pre pregnancy pants!! :D

Gah. I could have written this! That's what upsets me the most, I think. I've worked SO HARD to be comfortable with my body as is! Let alone a time when I'm supposed to gain weight! I'm pretty much under the impression that I'll take his concern into consideration, and think about what I eat a little more, and try to get a few extra walks in a week. BUT! I'm not going to obsess over 3 lbs. I refuse to let myself get back to that place!

Crazy doc! Especially when you consider a different pair of pants/clothing/jewelry can weigh a pound or two. Now if you gained 10-15 pounds from one appt to the next they maybe have been justified in their comments but still could have went about it with way more tact. Like someone said the time of day, water intake, not pooping, etc could easily account for it. I'm emotional enough right now, I would have probably started crying and then later got angry.
  • I'm 5'6" and weighed the same as you pre-pregnancy. At 24 weeks I've gained 17lbs (having twins) and my OB says my weight gain has been right on track for a twin pregnancy. You should be gaining some weight. He should not have made you feel that way. I'm sorry!
  • Woah! I started out 181 at 5'8" and I've gained like 15 lbs.

  • Wow 3-4lbs I would say you are doing fantastic!  So at 24 weeks your baby should be getting close to the 2lbs mark.. so 2lbs of baby + 2lbs of poop I would say you have nothing to worry about :p I would say CONTINUE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF :)

Boy if I was going to see your doc, I wouldn't want to hear what he has to say to me lol I started at 155lbs, from week 5-15 lost 14lbs due to HG, from 15-20 gained 4 lbs, and then last week had my 25 week checkup and I climbed up on the scale and bam 182lbs! Ouch....where did this weight come from lol My doc told me it is a little too much weight, and it came on a little fast, but to just try to control it in the next weeks.

    So I say ignore him!

I'm 5'5" and weighed more than you pre-pregnancy. I'm 29 weeks and I'm up 14 pounds. At my appointments when I gain 5 pounds in a month she looks at me like I disgust her and then asks "Well... 5 pounds in a month is a lot... what exactly have you been eating?" It makes me want to shrivel up and die!

She told me to up my water intake so I wouldn't eat too much. Did that. I also started keeping a food journal and made sure I was eating yogurt, fruits, vegetables, spinach wraps for lunch, etc. I even started walking. I STILL gained 5lbs.

I did what I could and still gained the weight. I'm not going to let my doctor make me feel terrible about myself when I'm doing everything right. When I go in for my appointments, I just bite my tongue and think happy thoughts.

Do what you can to be healthy, but don't let anyone make you feel like that!
