Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Where does your baby sleep?

I'm in the second tri and we are preparing to set up the nursery. We live in a two bedroom house - the master bedroom is on the main floor and our walk-up attic (1/2 story) is the second bedroom. The master is large enough to hold our bedroom area and a full nursery, so I think we will be sharing a room with the baby for at least 4-6 months and then moving our room upstairs.

My question is: do I need a bassinet or pack-n-play right away? The crib will be IN our room. Do newborns have difficulty sleeping in the crib?

 Thanks for your help!

Re: Where does your baby sleep?

  • Your gonna love this:

He sleeps in our walk in closet (which is off the master bathroom) in a bassinet. Once he outgrows his bassinet, we will move him to the nursery, which is upstairs. The master is downstairs.

  • We cosleep. He won't really sleep in his crib yet. He prefers to sleep on us for naps and snuggled right next to us at night.

  • Our LO started off sleeping in a bassinet at night, pnp during the day for naps.

  • Thanks so much for your input! I guess I'm trying to figure out if a newborn starts in a bassinet/pnp because they sleep better there or because the parents want the baby near them and don't want to put the crib in their room?
  • I hate to spend money on things we won't use (and I loathe more clutter in the home even more!! lol) so I would say to give the crib a try for a few nights. Chances are, DC will be just fine, but if not, then a baby store is presumably only a drive away :)

And to answer your question, DS sleeps in a pnp next to our bed for now. We don't know yet if we're buying another crib for him or handing down DD's and getting DD a toddler or twin bed so we still need to decide on that.....

  • If the nursery wasn't on the second level, then he would have been in his crib since day one. but because he still gets up twice a night, it's just easier to have him "near" us. Although, he can't be in the same room. He is sooo noisy sleeping and dh is constantly hacking/coughing. It's just not a good combination.
  • We got a bassinet as a gift and used it for about a week.  We ended up moving DS to his crib in the nursery which is next door to our room, and he did just fine in the crib.  I've heard some people say that babies don't like them because the crib is so big compared to them and a bassinet is a little tighter, but we didn't have this issue at all.
  • We had our LO in a bassinet for about 7 weeks.  Once she was only waking up at about 4:30 and 7, we decided to try the crib and it has been fine.  She is still swaddled and we have a sound machine that has ocean waves playing, both were done in the bassinet.  I think the consistancy helped with the transition.  It did take her a bit longer to go down the first night, but nothing horrible.

As for your other question, I would use the crib.  Our LO's room is across the hall and I had always said she would start out in there.  The only reason we had a bassinet was because it was a hand-me-down from my sister-in-law.

  • Thanks girls! I really appreciate it :) I find baby gear COMPLETELY overwhelming! I think we'll start with a crib and see how it goes.
  • Our LO who is 3 weeks sleeps in the PNP during the night and sleeps in her crib during the day. She does perfectly fine in both.

  • our LO sleeps in his crib and has since day one but our house is one story with a basement so it's just across the hall.  since your LO's nursery is upstairs, i'd probably get a pack n play or bassinet for your room to avoid having to go up and down stairs all night.  our LO took really well to his crib right away but i know that's not the case for a lot of newborns!

  • to answer your question:

there is nothing magical or wonderful about a cosleeper, bassinet or PnP.  the baby likely won't sleep any better in them than in a regular crib.  most people buy the other sleeping items because it's easier to keep the baby in the parents' room using those things rather than dragging the crib in there.  since your crib will already be in the room, do yourself a favor and start putting baby to sleep in there - it will save you an annoying transition step down the road.  many babies resist moving to the crib once they get used to sleeping in the PnP or bassinet.  you'll be very thankful you won't have to deal with that in a few months!

FWIW, our little man has been sleeping in his crib (in his room) almost exclusively (one or two hard nights are the exception) since about 6 or 7 days old.  we didn't intend to do it that way...  he just HATED his rocking cocoon sleeper that we had set up next to our bed.  we tried the crib out of desperation one night and he slept like... well...  like a baby!!

  • Put that baby in their crib!  Both of my LO's slept in their cribs from about one week old.  They both slept in their bouncers by the couch the first week so my DH and I could take turns during the night and get some sleep.  But the earlier the baby sleeps in their crib the better.  My LO is currently sleeping from 8 til 7 which is great and we didn't have to go through the transition nightmare.
  • I bedshare with my little one.  We both love it and he sleeps from about 12:30am til about 4:30 or 5am. I feed him and then we sleep til about 9 or 10. I think this makes up for all the BF troubles I have had. =)

  • Our LO has slept in his own crib in his own room since the first night we were home.  He has no problem sleeping there.
  • We co-sleep.  We had bought a co-sleeper and its hooked up next to the bed...and its operating as a clothes hamper at the moment.  He's just too snuggly and cute...snuggling with him in bed is my favorite time of the day.

  • DS has slept in his crib in his own room from the beginning.  Our room is right down the hall.  We have a video monitor...I like to be able to see what he's doing as well as hearing him.

Our crib doesn't fit in our room, so she sleeps in the newborn napper part of the PNP by our bed.  I like it b/c it sort of cradles her and seems warm and cozy.  If she had her preference, though, she'd sleep on my or DHs chest all night (she seems to prefer sleeping on her side or tummy...)

  • My LO sleeps in a co-sleeper (arms reach) that attaches to our bed. I thought she would be in the crib immediately, but it is much easier for feedings when she is closeby and I can constantly check on her to make sure she is breathing or soothe her to try to get another few hours of sleep. She sleeps in a snuggle nest inside the co-sleeper. The first 6 weeks she slept in that on our bed, between our pillows. But it is so much easier having her in her own space off the bed, but still closeby.
