One pump or two?

I'm just beginning to look into purchasing a breast pump.  This may sound like a silly question, but why would a person only want a single pump? Wouldn't it be more efficient to use a dual pump?

Also, what about the manual pumps...wouldn't your hand get tired?

Pardon my ignorance!!

Re: One pump or two?

  • Pumping both sides is supposed to stimulate better milk production but I have just used one side when DD nursed on the other. If you have the money I suggest getting a dual electric, especially if you have to pump regularly. I work full time and have the Medela PISA. I've never used a manual so I have no idea about that one.

  • Depends on your circumstances, really.  If you're going back to work, you want a double electric.  If you're a SAHM who will only need an occasional bottle, a single manual is fine (why spend the $ on something you don't need?).

I've used both (I'm a working mom).  The manual doesn't really hurt, actually.

  • I have a manual in case I forget one of my pump parts. It does hurt my hand toward the end of pumping. If someone is SAH and never plans to create a stash, a manual is probably okay for just an occasional need to relieve engorgement but if you're pumping with any regularity (even just once a day to start a stash/let Dh feed every once in a while), a double electric is a must have in my book.
