Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Avocado instead of cereal?

My LO will be 5 months on Tuesday.  She's 16 pounds and is in the 94% for weight.

I started with some rice cereal last Saturday for 4 days--and she shaked everytime we gave it to her.  I even put breastmilk in it.  I then tried oatmeal for a few days and did the same thing.

Now I know there was a post about how nasty it was...so I guess I'm thinking she doesn't like the taste.  I tried an avocado and she did really well. Is it okay to go to solids like that right away instead of waiting until 6 months?

Thanks!

Oh...and my pedi said it was okay to start cereal at the 4 month check.

  • My pedi said as long as you only do one food at a time to detect if they have any reactions were good.
  • When my pedi gave us the go-ahead for solids she told us we could start with anything we wanted, it didn't have to be rice cereal. If she does well with avacado, I say stick with that!
  • actually avocado is a great food to start with because it is so rich in nutrient and so easy to prepare

some people advocate starting with fruits and veggies because they are easier to digest before grains

I am going to start with avocado also. LO is about 4.5 months and 16 pounds. We might start next week.

  • I started DS with avocado. A few days before he turned 5 months we tried it and he did well. Then we did rice cereal and then bananas. I'm a slacker though and haven't done solids the last 2 days.

  • When I started solids with my DS when he was younger we went straight to veggies and fruit and skipped rice cereal. I think it's nasty mush! He was 5 months. I intend to skip cereal again with my DD and go straight to veggies first!

Ditto! We started with rice cereal but she hated it. We did bananas next and that was MUCH more palatable to her. Avocado and carrots are next on our list.

  • my pedi told me no avocado until 7-8 months. mango also and to consider them tropical.  she said we should do orange veggies, fruits, green veggies in that order.

i am just telling you what my pedi told  me yesterday when i asked her about avocado.

  • The AAP recommends waiting until 6 months to introduce solids but many people start earlier.  If you choose to start now, avocado is a fine choice!

  • DS pedi gave us the green light to start solids at 4 months whenever we felt he was ready.  He said to skip the cereal (because it's just downright yucky) and that he can have ANY fruits and veggies.  We started with avocados and have given him a variety but will stay away from gassy veggies like broccoli and such because he is already a gas monger.  Also, pedi told us that he can have as much as he wants at each meal (because at the 5 month appt it seemed that he wanted to keep eating and eating) and feed him more times during the day if necessary.  So far we are feeding him 2 oz mid morning and about 4-5 oz around dinnertime.

You should definitely speak w/ your pedi to make sure that you are meeting the minimum for either formula or breastmilk before adding in solids.
