The schedule I got from my dr. said they only do sonograms when medically necessary and usually around weeks 18-20 I'm 14 weeks now and finally have my first appointment with my dr. on tuesday, and we're hoping for a sonogram.
Did you have to wait till 18-20 weeks?
Re: When did you get you're first ultra sound?
1st at 8 weeks (to date the pregnancy).
2nd at 12 weeks was elective (paid OOP for NT scan).
3rd at 20 weeks (anatomy scan).
Not having any more unless my midwife has any concerns about the baby in late pregnancy.
I had one at my first appt just to date it and because I had a M/C last year and they just wanted to make sure everything is okay.
My next appt I will have the anatomy scan. I will be 18 weeks. Nothing else is planned. I did have a super quick one at my last appt. just to get the heartbeat. They would get it for a second and then lose it.
I didnt, thanks for pointing that out, that is too cool!!!
I've had u/s's done at 6 wk, 12 w, 16w 6d and 20w 6d so far. I don't know if it's because I had a m/c or because of one large fibroid that they like to monitor more frequently by u/s.
That would be incredibly difficult to wait so long to see LO!
At my Dr's office everyone gets at least three, more if you are high risk or an issue come up. Also that is three not including the NT scan. If you get that you could count that as a forth.
First one was at 9 weeks with Ds and 8 weeks this time with DD.
Second one for both was at 20 weeks.
Third one is around 37-38 weeks for me.
I'll have my first at 21 weeks. I see a MW and didn't need one to date the pregnancy bc I knew when I ovulated. We opted out of getting an NT scan, and are going to get the anatomy scan that's offered at 18-20 weeks. We won't have another unless there's an issue that needs to be monitored.
Also, a lot of insurance companies won't pay for additional u/s unless they're medically necessary, so it may be something the doctors office adopted too.
It's pretty normal to only have the anatomy ultrasound around 20 weeks unless there are medical reasons to get more ultrasounds.
I did have one at 11 weeks b/c the doctor couldn't find a hb on the doppler and didn't want me to freak out for the next 4 weeks until my next appt. I opted out of the NT scan too so if I hadn't gotten that earlier ultrasound my only one would have been the 20 week one.
My first was at 8wks, I had another at 10w and 13wks.
We didn't have any hints on the sex of the baby until week 20 though!
I had problems with a kidney stone and spotting that concerned my doctor. Since then, my pregnancy has gotten much easier.

11 Weeks cause baby was kick so much we couldn't get a good read on the HB. It was just a little US.
14 Weeks, due to a low lying placenta that caused cramping and bleeding
and i am getting on this Friday 18 weeks for the anatomy. There may be one more they do on the 28th week to check how the placenta is doing. But we will find that on friday if more US's will be needed to monitor it.
Normally my ob office offers one scan at 18 weeks for the anatomy. And then they add from there if they are medically necessary.
I had one at my first appointment, which was around 9 weeks. I had one at my second appointment around week 13. I had one at my third appointment around week 17 and then this past Thursday was the anatomy scan. The second and third ones were only because i had a cyst on my ovary and she wanted to keep an eye on it. The first three were vaginal. And i will be getting another ultrasound in about 4 weeks at my next appointment because my dr couldnt get a good look at his spine.
My first one was at 8w to date the pregnancy, 11w3d for the NT scan, 17w3d for the anatomy scan, at one scheduled at 28w to make sure my low lying placenta moved up.
I had my first at 5w4d, second at 7w4d, third at 11w4d, and most recent one at 16w4d. I will have my fifth u/s at 20w4d.... then every two weeks until 30 weeks.
I am high risk so ultrasounds are the norm for me. In a low risk pregnancy I think it is perfectly fine to wait until the anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks.
My first one was done to date and I was positive of my last period.
This...
I think the biggest deal is most insurance companies only pay for 1 u/s per pregnancy "unless medically necessary." (Even then it's usually subject to your deductible, which you have to meet during pregnancy anyway, so it's typically no big deal.)
When I worked for an OB they would do 1 around 8-10 weeks if your pregnancy hadn't been confirmed. From an insurance standpoint this didn't count as part of your pregnancy. Technically you're coming in to be seen for a problem - which is you're not having a period. It's a diagnostic u/s. Then the 18-20 wk u/s still counts as the one you get during your pregnancy. My own OB seems to follow the same routine.
I've had 3 so far - that initial one (8 weeks or so) and then 2 for early bleeding. Then we have to have one to check my cervical length on the 21st.
I had one at my 7 week "confirmation" appt. Then I had a long one at my NT scan.
Then I "had one" at my 16 week appt. because she couldn't find the HB on the doppler. It last for maybe 3 seconds. She saw the heartbeat and turned it off.I don't know if that really counts, but it's standard at my doc's office to pull out the u/s machine if they can't detect the heartbeat on the doppler (which is not unusual early on!)
Then I had the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.
Most of the time people get 1 u/s between 18-20 weeks.
I got a very quick one around 16 week with the portable u/s machine at my doctor's office but that was only because my doctor had time.
Other wise it would have just been the one that we are having on Monday.
My first was 7w5d to check viability. Then the NT scan at 12 weeks and one earlier the same day to look for the hb when the doppler wouldn't work.
I had an elective one at 15w5d for sex. Starting on Tuesday I get one every 2 weeks until week 28 and then every 4 weeks until delivery. And somewhere in there I get my anatomy scan.
