Breastfeeding after nipple ring ?

This may sound very odd, but I have a new worry to add to my list.

I had a nipple ring many years ago, however the holes never fully closed up. DH made a joke about milk squirting out the sides when I breastfeed and now I am kind of worried that this could happen / be a problem.

Does anyone have any experience/information about this?  TIA!

  • I'm curious about this as well!  I took mine out maybe 7 or 8 years ago, had them in for less than a year, and they're still not 100% closed.  TMI alert-- I get calcium build up that squeezes out of the holes, ewww!  I'm would guess that the milk will come out of the holes, but I'm not sure.  DH jokes that the baby is going to gag because there will be so much milk at once!

  • My Brothers wife had a nipple ring thats not closed and she was able to nurse fine. I dont think its cause for HUGE concern :D

  • I took mine out about 2 years ago, but it appears the holes have closed up.  If not, whichever baby is on that breast will be getting quite a bit of milk!

  • I worried about the same thing. I took mine out about 7 years ago. I don't think mine are still open since nothing comes out of them. Anyway, I googled it a few weeks ago and everything that I read said that there shouldn't be any issues.
  • No it won't be a problem. I asked once when getting a different piercing and they said your nipple basically has a bunch of little tiny 'straws' inside so it won't squirt out the side or anything and should be fine.

At least thats what I was told!

  • I've been worried about this as well.. except I've been extra worried because **cringe in pain warning**   - my left got ripped out.. so um.. the left nip is partially ripped halfway through the middle.. (racing accident.. handlebar went up under chest plate and ripped through everything - crushed my ribcage.. so the nip rip wasn't even noticed until later..)

Thinking this might be a cause for concern when attempting to bf... :(

I'm starting to leak, I haven't had any come out the holes yet. It doesn't always come out the middle part though, it comes out from all around the nipple, so I assume it will come out the holes on the sides too once I get a good flow going. I think that LO's mouth will cover up the whole nipple though, so I'm not worried about what part of the nipple the milk comes out.
