Babies: 0 - 3 Months

From 3rd tri: If you went into labor on your own...

Hi ladies. I had my 1st internal yesterday and my cervix is closed up like Ft. Knox. I'm disappointed as I thought I would've made SOME progress by now. I realize I'm fishing here- but looking for some positive stories.

With your 1st baby:

-What week did you start making progress/find out via internal that you were dilating?

-When did you go into labor on your own?

Thanks for sharing.

Re: From 3rd tri: If you went into labor on your own...

  • At 37 weeks I was 1-2cm dilated, and 80% effaced. I was the same at 38 and 39 weeks. At 40 weeks, I was 2cm and 90% effaced. I went into labor on my own at 40w4d. Oh, and by 38 weeks I had lost my MP and was having irregular contractions. Based on that, I'd say progress really doesn't mean much. Good luck!! :)

  • DS#1---checked at 35w appt, 1 cm and 30%....same at 36w

    37w appt was 2cm and 80%, same at 38w

Went into labor at 38w6d, ended up with csect

DS#2--wasn't checked until 38w4d appt b/c I was having a repeat csect....was 1 cm (extremely disappointed in lack of progress since I had been in so much pain/BH contrax for weeks) and went in having real contractions all morning....was checked a few hours later and was 3 cm and contracting from 8-10 min apart since that morning.  Delivered that evening.

  • I didn't get an internal until 39 weeks.  At 39 weeks I was 90% effaced dilated 1 cm.  I was exactly the same one week later at 40 weeks and 4 days.  That night my water broke at 11 p.m.  I was 4 days past my due date.  Don't stress, your body will know what to do.  I was convinced I was going to be 2 weeks late so I was really surprised when my water broke, especially since I had made zero progress in that week.
  • I was going to be induced at 39 weeks due to high amniotic fluid levels. I went in for an u/s and nst at 38 weeks (I was having these each week). At that point I was around 2cm. They decided to induce the next evening due to high fluid levels. I got to the hospital and when they hooked me up to the monitor I was having contractions. My water broke on its own that evening around 11:30. The week before I was not even 1cm. Hope that helps. GL!
  • 37 weeks: 1-2 cm, 70%

    38 weeks: 2+ cm, 70%

    39 weeks: 3 cm, 70%

Delivered at 39w2d. Never felt a contraction (BH or otherwise) until I went into labor.

  • No internals prior to my water breaking at 37w2d.
  • At my 38 week appt I was locked up like fort knox also. That's also the week I went into labor. My water broke and when i got to the hospital I was still not dialated. They started me on pitocin. LO pooped and they needed to get him out.

  • I hadn't made any progress at my 39 wk appointment due to a prior cervical surgery.  I went into labor naturally at 40wks 3d and it took forever to dilate...but once I did, I went from 3cm to 10 cm in under an hour.

  • I didn't dilate at all until I went into labor at 39 wks 4 days. My cervix had softened but that was it. This is my first baby. By the time I got to the hospital I had dilated almost 3 cm. GL.
  • At 39 weeks I was still closed, at 40 I was 1-2 and at 40 wks 5 days I went into labor naturally.

  • At my 39 week appnt, I still had no "progress". My water broke 4 days later and my LO was born 2 days before my EDD. We brought him home from the hospital on his due date :)

IMO, progress is only important if you're being induced.

  • It's so variable.

My first was breech so a c-section was scheduled (after a failed external version) at 38.5 weeks.  It was scheduled so early because I was 3+ cm/ 100% effaced.  Never went into labor.

With my second, I was 1 cm/70% effaced for WEEKS (they started internals at 35 weeks and that's where I was).  I didn't have DS until 41.5 weeks and that was after an accupuncture session to induce labor.

  • at my 39 week appt i was 1 cm.  my dr said i will more than likely be late...possibly need to be induced because baby seemed content in there...three days later my water broke and i went into the hospital still at 1 cm.  they gave me petocin to help with dilation, and 16 hours later i had my little boy!

  • With DD I had my first internal at my 39wk apt the day before actually turning 39wks and I was 2cm and 50% effaced. The next morning at 8am I had my first painful contrax, water broke a half hour later, and I had my daughter in my arms 5ish hours after that at 2pm.

  • At 37 & 38 weeks I was at 1 cm and at 39 weeks I was at 2 cm.  My baby was born on his due date.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

I know-- you're right. I have to remind myself that you can go from zero to labor with no warning.

  • At my 37w2d appt I was 1cm dilated and 70% effaced. My water broke at home at 11pm on 38w0d and I had my little girl at 4:56am on 38w1d. You just never know!

    Good Luck!

OP comment exactly. I was 38 weeks and absolutely NO progress (on a Thursday check-up.)  My doctor was going out of town, and told me not to worry, he would definitely be back before our baby was born. Not even true what-so-ever... I went into labor 3.5 days later, and when I arrived at the hospital only a short 2 hours after feeling my first contraction, I was 100%, +4 station, and 7 cm.

    Wow!

  • Thank you ladies!
  • At 35 weeks I was 2 centimeters dialated and 30% effaced. Went into labor at 39 weeks and was still 2 centimeters dialated at that time although I was 70% effaced at that time.
  • 36 weeks:  1cm, 70% effaced

    37 weeks: 1cm, 80% effaced

38w4d: 2cm, 90% effaced.  My water broke that night, and I was still 2 cm when I got to the hospital.  3 1/2 hours later I was at 10cm.

  • at 36 wks i was 2 cm

    at 38 wks i was 3 cm

water broke at 39 wks, 1 day.  when i got to the hospital i was 4 cm

  • I didn't have any internals since I didn't care if I was dialated or not. My first internal was AFTER my water broke but no contrax yet and I was thin and closed, 6 hours later I was MAYBE 1/2CM contrax where consistance by then and I was fully dialated 12 hours later and starting to push

Oh and I was 40w2ds when I had him
