Life-Long Back Sleeper ???

I have always slept on my back for as long as I can remember, and for the life of me I cannot stay on my side at night! I know it's not supposed to be a big deal now, but I want to get in the habit before my 3rd tri when it can cause problems. I bought this...

...thinking it would help (I flip it the opposite way than in the pic, so the long part is against my back) but it doesn't. Don't get me wrong, it's a great pillow, super comfy, and def worth the price, if only it could keep me on my side!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Life-Long Back Sleeper ???

  • I have a snoogle as well, and honestly, I still sleep on my back some nights. That's the only way I could get comfortable last night. As long as you are comfortable then you're fine. You're body will let you know when sleeping on your back is no longer an option. I think the only reason I am still able to sleep on my back is because I have an anterior placenta so there isn't much weight on that blood vessel yet.

  • I have one of those pillows and it's pretty good... the cover is really rough compared to my usual pillow cases, so that kinda drives me insane... and if you like to change positions during the night it can be a bit awkward cuz it's bulky.

I was told that as long as I'm not FLAT on my back, it's safe... however sleeping on your left-side is optimal. So sometimes I'll just get lots of pillows and prop myself up a bit so I'm a bit on an upward angle vs. lying flat.

  • My neighbor had the same issue, her doctor said if she could prop herself up she could sleep on her back, just not flat so she had all sorts of pillows behind her to put her in a reclining position and she was able to sleep that way
  • I know someone who has sleep apnia (i think that is what it is called- I get all the medical terms mixed up!) and she bought this super expensive thing which would wake her up if she rolled onto her back.  Well- it made a really loud noise every time she rolled over and it scared the fool out of her towards where she couldn't fall back asleep for a while.  She returned it and opted for this super cheap trick- get two tennis balls, 2 socks, and 2 safety pins.  Put one ball in each sock, then pin each sock to the back of your night shirt (one more to the left and one more to the right).  It keeps her from rolling on her back b/c it's uncomfortable but it also doesn't scare her awake like the machine did.  Maybe that will help you.

My plan is to sleep in our recliner- I fall asleep on my side but always end up waking up on my back...

What about throwing a pillow under one hip (and along your back a little bit) and just sleeping on your back, on a tilt? My nurse and MW said that's okay, just try to get a 30 degree angle going. You can also sleep on an incline on your back--just not flat.

  • I just asked my doc about back sleeping at my appt on the 8th and she said it is completely fine, until your body tells you to stop.  She said it is obvious because you will fell light headed/funny if you aren't supposed to be on your back.  You will not be comfortable at all once you should not be sleeping on your back.

ETA:  I sleep on my back most of the night and no issues yet.  You'll know because you will be cutting off circulation and will feel sick.

It is pretty rough, but it's the only one I found that came with a removable cover, most you have to order the cover seperately and they run $20-$30. When I end up on my back with it, I'm always tangled in it. Takes me 5 minutes to figure out which limb goes where haha!  I think I'm going to try propping myself up and see if I like it, thanks for the advice.

BTW, I love the quote in your siggy. For the life of me, I can't remember the title of the book (which is dumb, because it's probably one of the lines IN your siggy lol) but I have been looking for it everywhere. I want to have it for the baby. =) Can you help?

  • You know what's funny is that I have never been a back sleeper until now when I am pregnant lol! Now, I always wake up on my back and the baby is kicking like mad, so I turn to the side. I still wake up on my back. my doctor said it's not really bad for the baby to sleep on your back, but it can make you dizzy due to basically everything smushing against you. I wouldn't worry too much. If your body is uncomfortable, you will wake up anyway.
