So, it is muggy as hell here and I'd really like an ice cold beer! I haven't had anything to drink since Kellen was born. I've heard people say that you need to "pump and dump" but then I've also heard people say recently that it's not necessary to do that.
So, if you drink and BF, what do you do?
Re: BF & Alcohol
What I have heard and my sister's dr. has told her is that ... as a rule of thumb ... if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. They say that alcohol isn't stored in your milk so it is processes just like it is in the rest of your body and there is no reason to pump and dump.
But I'm no expert either.
That is what I've heard as well. Just curious if any of you girls actually do this.
I have had a Pina Colada and then breastfeed after, HOWEVER she was extremely gassy after that, but I think that had to do with the Pineapple since it is so acidiky, I do not think it had anything to do with the alcohol. I was told one drink and you do not need to pump but any more than you should pump and dump...
Enjoy your ice cold beer!!!
My exact thought. I'm glad I'm not the only one missing a glass of a good red on occasion.
Ditto! I told DH he better have a bottle uncorked and waiting for me in the L&D room! haha.
Urg, for some reason I can't quote, but ditto what Dani said. Booze doesn't store in BM, so no need to pump & dump. Target sells test strips that you can dip in your pumped milk and to check the alcohol levels. I am totally regretting wasting that milk now. I stuck to the "if you're too drunk to drive, you're too drunk to pump rule. I pumped & dumped on what happened to be one of my highest output days, and really wish I had tried testing it before pitching it.

Funny story about the test strips. I have some and tested my BM after having a little bit of wine. I don't think I even changed the strip. DH decided he wanted to test his level so he put a little of his spit on it. He was way over the limit! haha!
As for wanting wine right away. I was really dying for wine my entire pregnancy and wanted to have a bottle ready for me right away so I could have some. However, when all was said and done, it was a couple of weeks before I even wanted a drop of it! Not sure why, but for some reason all desire for wine went away temporarily. It definitely came back later though!
Funny you ask- I'm having a Summer Shandy (just one) as we "speak"!
GO FOR IT!!!
I miss beer - especially during summer. Can't wait to have one...but I've got a long wait.
