Childbirth classes

Did anyone take childbirth classes that were more like a Bradley or Lamaze class? I took the hospital given class at GBMC last year with my friend and did not find it helpful at all.

I want to try for a natural birth in the hospital and hear this is the best way to prepate. I found some providers on the Bradley website but it just seemed to be couples teaching and that kind of creeped me out...

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Childbirth classes

  • I am taking a Bradley class with Jessica Grooves right now. It is no where close to being creepy and she is actually very qualified to be teaching these classes. She has had 3 natural births herself and is a doula and studying to be a midwife. Just an fyi she is very supportive of any natural birth but is very pro-midwife/homebirth so be prepared to hear a lot of negative things about hospital births.

  • I'm fairly certain that all Bradley classes are taught by individuals - my cousin is an instructor in PA.  Not creepy!

My favorite money saving tip: I've earned more than $300 in gift cards (Amazon, Starbucks, Southwest!) using SwagBucks for internet searching - and you can too! It's FREE and EASY!
  • My Bradley teacher does private lessons too!  I think she covers Cecil, Harford and most of Baltimore county.
  • Ditto the previous posters- most hospital classes are not going to focus on natural birth, since most women who deliver in hospitals don't have natural births (the epidural rate @ AAMC was 85% according the the class I took there, so they don't really bother to teach you how to go all the way w/o pain meds.)

Most of the instructors who teach Bradley, Hypno-birthing, hypno-babies methods are individuals who teach from their home or in your home, etc.

If you haven't read it already I strongly recc'd reading Ina Mae's Guide to Childbirth.  Reading it and watching the Business of Being Born were the only prep I did before having DS- but as my second baby he came in about half the time DD did- also I had the motivation of my birth experience w/ DD to go natural with DS.

  • I took Jessica Grove's Bradley method class and I LOVED it!  And I second the recommendations for Ina Mae's Guide ot Childbirth as well as the Business of Being Born.

There are also a great list of resources available on American Pregnancy Association's unmedicated birth forum.
