Breastfeeding

flange size question

I'm starting to think that I may need a bigger size but I'm having trouble looking on google.  I know if the nipple rubs along the sides that you need a bigger size.  My nipples don't rub along the sides, but my areola does, A LOT (like fills 1/2 the length when the pump is sucking).  We don't have oodles of money to just go buy things at a whim so I'd hate to buy it and not need it.  So from what I've described, what would you do?

Re: flange size question

  • If a lot of your breast is being pulled into the tube part of the shield, wouldn't that mean you have too large a shield?  This is happening to me as my son is getting older and not nusring as much.

I actually called Medela today b/c I couldn't find smaller sheilds anywhere near me and wanted to know if they made them and they're sending me a free pair!!  If you have a medela pump, give them a call:  800-435-8316

  • Not much of the "breast" just a large part of the areola (which yes, I know is part of the breast).
  • Either way, give the customer service a call (and if you have a different pump brand, google them) they were so happy to help.  Can't hurt to try.
  • I do have a Medela, I'll give them a call tomorrow (already tried tonight and they're closed).  Thanks for the number.

hmm im pretty sure mine does the same thing, but it doesnt feel painful and the nipple itself is getting sucked in and not being bothered, so i think its ok. I also wanted to tell you that the photo of your twins is so precious. i just showed it to my husband and we couldnt get over how cute they are!! it makes me want another boy :) they are so adorable together!!

Thank you, they're getting way too big way too fast.

  • I'm glad you asked bc I have the same issue when I use my Ameda Purely Yours. A large portion of the areola is getting sucked into the flange. I figured this was "normal" because dd gets the same area in her mouth when she eats, but now I'm wondering if I need a different size. Would you mind posting what Medela tells you? TIA!
