How do people do this long term? All I can think about is ice cream and peanut butter cups ;-). But I have lost 3lbs in 3 days so I guess that is something.
What made me think giving up sugar and caffeine at the same time was a good idea?

Good for you! The caffeine alone would have done me in.
Married 08.06 Started TTC 05.08 Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH DH: perfect 1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p 2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!
Good for you! Are you including fruits in the sugars that were cut out? I'm still eating lots of fruits. Did your doctor say to avoid fruits?
I am doing the first 2 weeks of South Beach which is no fruit, but I have been modifying that a little to just 1 piece of fruit per day and then in 2 weeks I can have fruit. I guess the first phase is supposed to be kind of like a detox to break your cravings so it is really really limited. I can add whole grains back into my diet in 2 weeks too.

Nice! I don't think I could ever do the full South Beach diet because I like fruit, and they are so much easier to find in my work cafeteria than vegetables.

Wow - that's hardcore! Good for you. I was just thinking about how I've been eating too much sugar. Blah. Maybe it's time for me to do some detoxing also.

Does it help if I say that I PROMISE it will get easier. I have been caffeine, sugar and white bread/paste free for almost a year. (Well with a couple of bad moments after both m/c where I ate entire gallons of ice cream) The first few weeks will suck but then it gets lots easier.

Yay the limited fruit in phase 1 is really hard because I eat a lot of fruit. But it is only 2 weeks and then I can have low glycemic fruits again. Right now meals are tough though because we can't even have like brown rice or quinoa or anything like that. Usually that is one of our go to sides with dinner. We are eating a lot of salads. And it sure doesn't help that I am not much of a veggie lover ;-). Oh well 11 more days. I just hope this is what finally works for me to lose weight because I am so tired of trying and failing.

Yes it does help. I have seen so many ladies (yourself included) on this board have amazing results that is why I am trying it. It is nice to be able to see how successful people have been.

Are you changing your eating habits for health reasons, i.e.g prediabetic, lowering cholesterol, or just in general because it's good to avoid white flour and processed foods?

Mo I am really overweight and have struggled for years to lose it but have been unsuccessful. My endocrinologist says that due to the Hashimoto's and hypothyroid it is just a lot harder for me to lose weight, I always get frustrated and give up. Recently I had my blood sugar tested and it was 97 while fasting which I know is not good. My cholesterol is great, really low. So I have just decided that whether I lose any weight or not I have to get my blood sugar down and under control because I really don't want to be diabetic on top of everything else I am dealing with.

I'm about 10-15lbs away from my goal. I wish you THE BEST LUCK! Blow my #'s out of the water!

I don't think I could survive on South Beach. I'm so impressed at your willpower. I've discovered an iPhone application that lets me track my weight, what I eat (they have a very complete database of foods) and anything physical I do (also a complete database of different physical activities). It let me set a goal for what I want to do (gain 2 lbs. a week, gain 1 lbs. a week, maintain, lose 1 lb. a week, lose 2 lbs. a week, etc), and it tells me how many calories I have to fit into that. That's what I've been using along with my "closer to the root" diet, and it's been working pretty well. I did go through some sort of sugar withdrawal, though, where I got headaches, but those have since subsided. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress!

Good for you!! I bet that weight loss will be motivation for you!
I think after phase 1 and you can eat whole grains and fruit again it will be much easier. I eat mostly whole grains and really no sugar to speak of other than what is in fruit and felt so much better after elimating white starches. For the most part - don't get me wrong I still enjoy them sometimes!!

I did the South Beach Diet a couple of years ago. I lost 17 pounds in about 18 days -- I stretched out Phase 1. I was surprised that I didn't have a hard time sticking to Phase 1, but Phase 2 killed me. Apparently, I don't understand moderation.
Stick with it -- it'll be worth it. Maybe I need to give it another go? We'll see.
