How long does this biting last?

Good Lord, this sucks.

DD got her first two teeth (simultaneously) around a week ago.  For the past day or two, she has been biting my nipples nonstop, and those little teeth of hers are effing razor sharp.  I pull her off each time and make her wait to latch, but she inevitably just bites me again a few seconds later.

I've tried pushing her head towards my boob so that she's forced to open her mouth, but it only works until I back off...and as soon as I do, she bites down again.  It's the worst before my letdown...a few times, I couldn't even keep her on long enough to even get a letdown at all.

She hasn't nursed a full session in like six hours because I can't keep her from biting me long enough!  It's like she doesn't even care about eating, she just wants to gnaw on my nipple.

Is this just a stage that will pass?  My nipples are in agony and my patience is wearing mighty thin.

  • maybe try a bit of oragel on her gums before nursing?  That way they'd be numb and she might be a little less inclined to use your nips at teethers

  • It will pass.  You may have to unlatch her and set her down and walk away.  I only had to do that once and that got A to stop biting me.  For the time being.  She's moved on to biting my arms when I'm holding her, or worse, the back of my neck in a back carry.  Also, consider whether you want to give her some ibuprofen about 20-30 minutes before nursing to help her out if she's in pain.  She may be just wanting to gnaw b/c she hurts.  Sorry mama...  Also, take some of that ibuprofen for yourself, it helps.

  • Oh dear god...  O doesn't even have teeth yet and has started biting down hard this week. I'm in fear of what you're describing.

  • When you remove her from the breast, actually put her down on the floor (Like, "oh, you're biting mommy?  I guess you don;t want to nurse.")  If she fusses, then pick her up and try again.  If she does not fuss, let her play/hang out and wait a few minutes before trying again.  This worked in a few tries for my girls.  We still get a rare nip, but only if they are distracted or finished nursing.

  • Ditto on the put down and walk away.  DS was a little older when he bit (got through initial teething where you're at thank goodness!) and he understood more.  He bit, I unlatched him and said "ouch, that hurt mama" and put him on the floor.  My DH was on the other side of the room and he said that DS crawled away for a few seconds completely fine and then melted into tears.  I picked him up and nursed again and told him I loved him etc. and he never bit purposely again.  That said, DS has always been very empathic so I don't know if that's normal!

  • DS bit me some when he was teething, and it really sucks!!!! He usually did at the end of a session but whenever he did I made a big deal of it, took him off and sat him down in the floor (if we were on the couch, ect).

    It did get better...

  • We are going through the same thing right now.  I am so sorry, it is so painful!  I am having some success with breaking DD's latch and pausing for a few minutes.  I don't know if all LO's are this way, but I have noticed that she makes a certain facial expression before she bites.  I break her latch now as soon as I see the "biting" face!
  • Ari did this with the 1st tooth - he just got his 1st one 2 months ago. He would start biting right away. The first few times I tried unlatching or pressing his face in but it didn't help. Then he bit me really hard & I cried out. Scared the crap out of him & he started crying. I closed up shop & told him "you really hurt mommy, you cannot bite, mommy cannot nurse you if you bite". He started crying even harder so I comforted him, then tried to nurse again a few minutes later & he did fine. Later that day he started acting like he was going to bite but would look at me, almost like he couldn't help it but knew he shouldn't. Closed up shop again, set him down, explained no biting, tried again a few minutes later & he was fine. That went on for a couple of days & then never happened again.

  • Teething tablets worked wonders for me with this! She stops immediately when I use them. I also will stop her if she bites and say "no. That hurts mommy" and then keep her off for a minute. She will cry, and tthen I comfort and resume. It's rare anymore that she bites.
