Am I suppose to stop giving my son breastmilk via a bottle after he turns 1 yr old?
I am starting to wean I have tried a couple different things. First at daycare he gets two bottles of complete breastmilk so I tried 1/2 breastmilk and 1/2 cow's milk for his afternoon bottle---he ddin't take hisafternoon bottle well for all last week. This week I am trying to keep his 2 bottles complete breastmilk but then occur whole milk in a straw cup with his solids (which is 3 times a day). He nursed off me all this weekend but I offered whole milk and he took pretty well. However at daycare today he didn't take much of the cow's milk. He knows the straw cup well as I started around 9 months with just water in it.
I didn't know if it's better for him to associate the bottle with breastmilk and the straw cup with whole milk. Or should I get rid of the bottle?
Re: Stop bottle after 1 year?
I personally would just get rid of the bottle. At this point milk is a beverage not a meal. I offer my one year old BM in a sippy cup at meals (only because I'm trying to get rid of my frozen supply). She drinks about 6-8 ounces through the day. But she eats plenty of food and still nurses several times a day. She hasn't had a bottle since she was a little over 11 months old.
It's hard to switch from really being worried about how much milk they are getting to realizing that they no longer need as much milk. The longer you wait to take the bottle away the harder it will be. Since he can drink out of the sippy just fine I would just start putting his milk in there. It might take a day or two for him to figure it out, but he will. But know that he no longer needs 30 ounces or whatever a day, his consumption should drop off a lot and he should be eating more food than he was a few months ago.
