I have been lurking here for a few weeks and will most likely CD. At this point, I am thinking I will use prefolds/covers with NB stage and then do a trial of other kinds when the baby is bigger/sleeping longer. I don't understand the benefit of using AIO's or Pockets when you are constantly changing/not sleeping long intervals as a NB.. and input/reasons why you choose something other than prefolds at the beginning? Also, what is the advantage of a fitted over a prefold?
As for the trial programs, I have looked into Jillians Diapers extensively, but noticed on the board blog there are others mentioned. Anybody have any experience/recommendations for their trials?
Thanks in advance, I am looking forward to learning more about CD'ing from you than I already have!
Re: A couple CD ?'s
I think the benefit of AIOs or pockets early on is that you don't have to mess with two different things. Changes are much quicker. That said, we didn't start using pockets until 3 months. I don't use any AIOs - I like the adjustability of pockets. But I find that prefolds were easier to get clean during the EBF poop days.
I didn't use a trial. I bought a bunch of diapers before DD was even born (mostly pockets and fitteds), but then used a diaper service for the first four weeks. I figured I'd buy prefolds if I liked them after using the service. I was right. And bonus, the GMD prefolds I bought were WAY better than the diaper service ones. I ended up selling a few of the fitteds I had bought before DD was born because they didn't work well for her, but so far I've liked most of the other diapers I've bought pretty well.
I tried prefolds. I wanted to love them but I just couldn't. My kid is so squirmy they make putting a diaper on nearly impossible. So I use pockets, aio's and fitteds with covers. I can get those on and off quickly.
Edit: Wow. What happened to my typing skills?
Fitted diapers have some sort way of securing the diaper - snaps or velcro, so you don't have to worry about folding/tucking/pinning under a cover. We didn't start using pockets until sometime between 2-3 months old. I liked having the PFs in the beginning for the fit and because of the frequent changes. If she was just wet, I could reuse the cover and just put in a new PF so I felt that cut back on some laundry as opposed to having to wash every piece after every wear. But we used disposables at night until just a couple weeks ago, so I wasn't worried about fumbling with a PF and cover in the dark in the middle of the night.
We didn't use a trial, I just bought one or 2 diapers of several different brands in the beginning to see which ones we liked. I liked all of them for different reasons and the only issue we had was a skin sensitivity to BGs, so we ended up building our stash as a mix of different brands & styles. We have 5 different brands in rotation, mostly pockets, a few AIOs and a couple AI2s. I like having a variety.

In the newborn phase I prefer fitteds.
I didn't like prefolds at all. I found them to be too bulky and firm, if that makes any sense. They are the same thickness as larger prefolds, just cut to size. They just didn't seem to want to fold up as tiny as I needed (they did, but with bulk and awkwardness). Also, they never contained BF poo for me. I barely used mine
The fitteds were great. They were reliable (little to no poo leaking out onto the cover). They were also very easy for nights (hello waking up and can't see!).
I can't speak to trials a whole lot. I know there are several, but I have not personally used them. I jumped right into cloth diapering with a dozen prefolds and half a dozen BG OS pockets. It has snowballed since then
I now mostly use BG sized AIOs during the day & BG OS pockets at night (with natural inserts). I also have several Goodmama fitteds that I like for day or night use. They are great at night. You can find them for affordable prices used (and in great shape).

We actually had a nb who slept for 4-5 hour stretches the first week or 2 that she came home, so AIOs or pockets would have been a better choice for us. She ended up with a bad diaper rash because she was in mostly pfs and we weren't changing her often enough, Just something to consider.
The pfs were very easy for me, but so are fitteds. You just snap it on, add a cover, and off you go. But if you find that pfs work for you, go for it.
I didn't do a trial, so no advice there.
thanks! I may do more of a combo of prefolds and fitteds then for the newborn, fitteds sound easier at night!
Maybe I will just start shopping around for some good deals on bigger dipes now and stock up, it seems like you just don't know until you try and I have noticed what good resale they have anyway if I don't like them! Thanks for the advice!
