I'm reading The Baby Whisperer and I read this last night. Seeing as how I've already built up a "decent" stash and I see ladies on here that have HUGE milk stashes, I'm wondering if this is true.
"IMPORTANT REMINDER: Some mums who pump like to "stockpile" their breast milk "just in case." Unless you're going into surgery and you physically won't be around to feed your baby, don't pump more than an extra 3 days' worth. As your baby grows and changes, the content of your breast milk changes, too. Last month's breast milk may nopt be suited for this month's baby!"
Thoughts???
Re: Does this sound right? re: breastmilk
I have heard this. As for the donating thing, I've heard they try to match the age of the child to the "age" of the milk (I have never had first-hand experience with this).
DH and I were talking about the amount of stash, and how 100's of ounces seems excessive to us. I personally have about a week's worth extra and just use FIFO (first in, first out) for what I pump daily. My stash has been growing by about 4-6 ozs. everyday, but LO is still within 2-3 weeks of when I pumped what he is eating at daycare.
my thoughts exactly on the formula.
Completely agree.

Most moms use the stored milk for "extra" feeds, like a night out on the town, or in cereal/oatmeal, not a replacement of feedings. The baby is still getting 90% of their milk fresh.
(That all said, I had 600+oz in the freezer (5months ago) and we are almost out because she uses it in her cereal and I plan to use the remainder for 1/2 and 1/2 while weaning)
Yes, your milk does change. It changes constantly - if your baby picks up germs at the playground they can pass to your breasts when he nurses and then your milk includes antibodies for that particular germ. The amount of fay changes during almost every feeding. Milk at night can include special proteins that help the baby sleep. Isn't that AMAZING?
All that being said, I have a freezer stash of about 100 oz that I've had for almost a year. I just felt so much more confident saying I was exclusively breastfeeding knowing I had all that back-up milk just in case of emergency. And if I had ever had an emergency I would have been happy knowing my baby was still getting my milk, even if it wasn't the absolute ideal milk.
