Breastfeeding

Does this sound right? re: breastmilk

I'm reading The Baby Whisperer and I read this last night. Seeing as how I've already built up a "decent" stash and I see ladies on here that have HUGE milk stashes, I'm wondering if this is true.

"IMPORTANT REMINDER: Some mums who pump like to "stockpile" their breast milk "just in case." Unless you're going into surgery and you physically won't be around to feed your baby, don't pump more than an extra 3 days' worth. As your baby grows and changes, the content of your breast milk changes, too. Last month's breast milk may nopt be suited for this month's baby!"

Thoughts???

  • Doesn't sound right to me. When you donate milk to a milk bank - it is usually for a newborn, even though your milk may be for a toddler.

  • Maybe it has to do with your hormones or antibodies in the milk. I know that you have more hormones in your milk when you first start BFing.

  • I think your milk does change as your baby grows to suit their needs...I have noticed mine seems to be thicker now.  But I don't think it changes enough that milk from 3 months ago wouldn't be good or satisfying for LO

  • I have heard this.  As for the donating thing, I've heard they try to match the age of the child to the "age" of the milk (I have never had first-hand experience with this).

DH and I were talking about the amount of stash, and how 100's of ounces seems excessive to us.  I personally have about a week's worth extra and just use FIFO (first in, first out) for what I pump daily.  My stash has been growing by about 4-6 ozs. everyday, but LO is still within 2-3 weeks of when I pumped what he is eating at daycare.

  • I asked a LC this question.  Her answer was yes it changes but not enough to make a difference.  FF babies get the same milk from 0 to 12 months.

  • I've thought this numerous times but was frankly afraid to say so on here bc so many Moms pump and stockpile months and months of BM. I think it sounds exactly right. My LC says that your BM changes literally daily to adapt to exactly what your growing baby needs, so it doesn't make sense that what your newborn needed will be ideal for your 9 month old. It's still beneficial BM of course, just not the "ideal."

Most moms use the stored milk for "extra" feeds, like a night out on the town, or in cereal/oatmeal, not a replacement of feedings. The baby is still getting 90% of their milk fresh.

(That all said, I had 600+oz in the freezer (5months ago) and we are almost out because she uses it in her cereal and I plan to use the remainder for 1/2 and 1/2 while weaning)

  • Yes, your milk does change. It changes constantly - if your baby picks up germs at the playground they can pass to your breasts when he nurses and then your milk includes antibodies for that particular germ. The amount of fay changes during almost every feeding. Milk at night can include special proteins that help the baby sleep. Isn't that AMAZING?

All that being said, I have a freezer stash of about 100 oz that I've had for almost a year. I just felt so much more confident saying I was exclusively breastfeeding knowing I had all that back-up milk just in case of emergency. And if I had ever had an emergency I would have been happy knowing my baby was still getting my milk, even if it wasn't the absolute ideal milk.
